A huge tornado roared through the Oklahoma City area Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods and destroying the elementary school with a direct blow as children and teachers huddled against winds. Burgett's mother, Jackie Raper, had loaded the car with valuables hoping to leave the area before the tornado hit, but couldn't get out of the neighborhood.
