Manuel O. Martinez sobbed as hard as the family members of the man he killed after pleading guilty to intoxication manslaughter Thursday afternoon. Martinez agreed to serve 10 years in prison and pay $4,500 restitution for causing the death of Ricky Allen Parks II in May of last year. Parks, 39, was headed home from a friend’s house when Martinez ran a red light and slammed into him at about 11 p.m. May 26 at Milwaukee Avenue and Fourth Street.

Judge sentences convicted child molester to prison 03/10/11 - 4:55pm

A convicted child molester is prison-bound for fondling a young girl in 2008. Robert Puryear, 18, was sentenced today to eight years in prison by visiting Judge William P. Smith, of the 110th District. He must serve at least half his sentence before he can become eligible for parole; but he will receive credit for the 22 months he spent in county jail. A Lubbock County jury convicted Puryear of indecency with a child earlier this month after hours of cloistered deliberation.

Federal grand jury indicts Aldawsari 03/28/11 - 2:55pm

A federal grand jury today indicted on one weapons count a Saudi citizen accused of plotting attacks on United States targets. Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, 20, faces up to life in prison if convicted on the one-count indictment, charging him with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. Today's indictment made moot a hearing set for Friday in which U.S. Magistrate Nancy Koenig would have determined whether there was probable cause to move forward with the case against Aldawsari.

Terror suspect makes first court appearance 01/05/12 - 3:05pm

A Saudi student appeared to smile Friday morning as U.S. marshals escorted him to his first federal court appearance on a terror charge. Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, 20, stood before U.S. Magistrate Nancy Koenig charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.

A jailed former Lubbock police officer faces additional sexual assault charges for allegedly raping a woman in 2006. Co-defendant pleads guilty to role in 2009 death 02/17/11 - 5:27pm

A second defendant implicated in the death of a Lubbock County man pleaded guilty to aggravated assault Thursday and agreed to a five-year prison sentence. Armin Tavarez has been jailed since June 2009 for his role in causing the death of James Ledbetter. Ledbetter, 32, was found dead at his home in the 6900 block of CR 6300.

Pot peddlers plead guilty 02/17/11 - 5:25pm

Two Lubbock marijuana cultivators pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiring to distribute massive quantities of the illegal plant. Before U.S. District Judge Sam Cummings, Kyle Brandon Walker, 34, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 100 kilograms or more of marijuana. Shawn Mark McCardell, 27, pleaded guilty to doing the same with 50 kilograms or more.

Man pleads guilty, takes maximum sentence for manslaughter 02/15/11 - 11:29am

A Lubbock man pleaded guilty to manslaughter this morning and agreed to serve 20 years in prison for causing the death of James Ledbetter in 2009. Ledbetter, 32, was found dead at his home in the 6900 block of CR 6300. A Lubbock Sheriff's Department spokesman said at the time that Ledbetter died during a party he was hosting from a knife wound that hit his femoral artery. Investigators arrested Castillo in June 2009, along with Armin Tavarez and Delia Rios. The Sheriff's Office charged them with murder.
