MIDLAND — Darren Alexander hit a two-run double in the fifth inning that lifted Frenship past El Paso Franklin 6-5 Thursday, the opening day of the Tournament of Champions. The score was tied at 4 going into the bottom of the fifth. Bryndan Arrendondo doubled and Chandler Casey walked before Alexander’s double plugged the left-center gap. Franklin got a run back in the sixth inning, but Casey entered in that inning and got his first save. Casey went 2 for 3 and scored two runs.

FORT WORTH — Gilbert Vasquez made his Golden Gloves state tournament debut a good one. The Brownfield High School junior decisioned Dallas boxer Brandon Bailey on Wednesday night at John Justin Arena to advance into the semifinals of the 152-pound weight class at the Texas State Golden Gloves Championships. “It was really a one-sided fight,” said Edward Hernandez Jr., who coaches the Lubbock-district team Vasquez represents. “Gilbert did really good, I’m telling you. He really looked sharp.”

PLAINVIEW — Frenship might not subscribe to any sports superstitions, but the Tigers seem to have a prevailing lucky number from week to week in these playoffs: four, as in fourth quarter. Throughout the playoffs, Frenship has toppled opponents with excellent fourth-quarter performances, this time knocking out Canyon 71-53 Wednesday in a Region I-4A quarterfinal at Hutcherson Center. “These guys understand how to finish,” Frenship assistant coach Kyle Brown said. “They’ve got a lot of heart.”

Lady Chaps land four on top three SAC teams

Lubbock Christian University’s Nicole Hampton was named the Sooner Athletic Conference women’s basketball co-player of the year and co-defensive player of the year on the all-SAC team chosen by coaches. Hampton averaged 13.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists for the Lady Chaparrals, who are 26-3 and ranked No. 4 going into the postseason.

South Plains sweeps Frank Phillips 02/27/13 - 1:46am

BORGER — Stephanie Moore had 21 points and 12 rebounds as South Plains College beat Frank Phillips College 69-41 Tuesday, keeping the Lady Texans one game out of the lead in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. Lindsey Lee scored 16 points for South Plains (23-5, 10-3), which moved back into a tie with New Mexico Junior College (21-5, 10-3) for second place in the league. They stayed on the heels of No. 19 Midland College (23-6, 11-2). The game was postponed from Monday night because of the winter storm and perilous travel conditions.

Bryant resigns Flying Queens job 02/25/13 - 1:32am

PLAINVIEW — Wayland Baptist women’s basketball coach Tory Bryant resigned Sunday, citing a desire to spend more time with his family. The Wayland athletic department made the announcement a day after the Flying Queens finished the regular season with a 15-15 record. The Queens were 7-9 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, finishing in a three-way tie for fourth place.

Three Lubbock wrestlers earn all-state 02/24/13 - 2:04am

AUSTIN — Joseph Rios can look forward to next year with high aspirations. For now, he’s an all-state wrestler and the highest finisher ever for Estacado at the UIL state tournament. Rios finished fourth in the 138-pound weight class in Class 4A, losing his third-place match Saturday 6-3 to Region II champion Aaron Guery from Lancaster. “I’m happy. It was a blessing to be there,” said Rios, who finished his junior season 26-9. “I didn’t like to lose, but it just wasn’t God’s plan for me to win yet.”

Cox, Parham claim state gold 02/24/13 - 2:01am

AUSTIN — Madisyn Cox saved some of the best swimming of her decorated high school career for the very last day. The Lubbock High senior won two gold medals at the UIL state swimming and diving championships Saturday, in each case breaking Class 4A state records that she’d set the day before in preliminaries. While Cox captured the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, Monterey junior Jaecey Parham claimed a gold and a bronze in a banner day for Lubbock ISD swimming.

No. 2 LCU splits two games at St. Mary's tournament 02/23/13 - 1:25am

SAN ANTONIO — Megan Sullivan, Stephanie Rendon, Latainna Eltsosie and Faith Koria each drove in a run in a four-run first inning as No. 2 Lubbock Christian University beat St. Mary’s 6-3 Friday at the St. Mary’s Round Robin. LCU had a 6-0 lead after the first two innings. McKenzie Clemmons and Rendon each drove in a run in the second. Katera Eltsosie (5-0) pitched the final 61/3 innings for the Lady Chaps, allowing three runs on nine hits. She struck out five and walked three.

High school sports roundup: Three to wrestle for third at state 02/23/13 - 1:40am

AUSTIN — Monterey senior Wes Benton, Estacado junior Joseph Rios and Lubbock High sophomore Daxx Medina can’t win state titles, but the alternative’s not bad either. All three Lubbock ISD athletes advanced to third-place matches today at the Class 4A UIL state wrestling championships. Benton, Rios and Medina each won their first two matches, lost a winners’ bracket semifinal and won an elimination-bracket semifinal in the first two days of action.
