City seeks summer workers for camp counselors, lifeguards, cashiers, concession attendants and pool laborers

The Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department will hold a summer job fair for hiring seasonal summer staff for about 55 part- and full-time positions. The event is set for 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the parks and recreation office at 1611 10th St., according to a statement from city spokesman Jeff McKito. Part-time positions available include summer camp counselors, lifeguards, cashiers, concession attendants and pool laborers at Lubbock community center and the city’s four municipal pools. All positions require a criminal background check and drug screening.

Council to consider appointing 9-member board during meeting later this month

As the statewide oil boom continues to flow into Lubbock, the City Council will look to citizens for guidance in evaluating the industry’s effects on the city. A resolution proposed by Councilwoman Latrelle Joy and Councilman Todd Klein creates a nine-member Oil and Gas Citizen Advisory Committee to analyze current methods of oil and gas exploration, development and production, including hydraulic fracturing, and make recommendations to the council this summer regarding potential regulations and ordinances.

Council adopts LP&L rate hike set for June 1 05/10/13 - 12:43am

The increase is projected to increase average residential bills upward of $7 per month annually

Lubbock’s City Council opted for sooner rather than later in implementing a 9.7 percent Lubbock Power & Light electric rate set to begin June 1. The increase is projected to increase average residential bills upward of $7 per month annually and is the first rate hike for LP&L customers in four years. “It’s never pleasant to raise rates,” Councilman Todd Klein said. “Unfortunately we’ve got to pay the bills like anybody else.” The 6-1 council vote came with Mayor Glen Robertson’s opposition, with the mayor recommending the increase not take effect until Oct. 1.

Cause of leak still under investigation 05/10/13 - 12:04pm

Leak started about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bayer CropScience facility on Erskine Street

Officials announced Airgas had removed all of the liquid in the leaking container at Bayer CropScience by 6 p.m. Thursday, May 9. The pressure that remained in the leaking tank had been reduced to the point where the leak had stopped, according to a Lubbock city news release. But officials with the Lubbock Fire Marshal’s Office, Bayer CropScience, its chemical supplier and the state’s environmental agency were still looking at what prompted the leak and steps needed to secure the area.

Imagine Lubbock Together to unveil priorities in Community Report 05/09/13 - 12:21am

Event set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cactus Theatre

Imagine Lubbock organizers say they’ve narrowed citizens’ wishes in to eight priorities for the city’s future, but Lubbockites have to wait for a meeting next week to see them. The Imagine Lubbock Together steering committee will host a Community Report event to unveil what organizers call a draft plan for Lubbock’s future from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at the Cactus Theatre, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave., according to a statement from the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, which spearheaded the Imagine Lubbock project.

Utility companies working to move lines to new undergounrd ducts

Progress on downtown Lubbock’s evolving utility project continues moving underground. Work is mostly complete on the first of four phases of the project set to hide the web of utility lines and power poles developers say tangle their plans to transform the area into a social and business hub as part of the city’s downtown redevelopment plan.

Sales tax allocations on slow rise for 37th consecutive month

Lubbock will receive a $5.74 million sales tax distribution from the state Friday, May 10 — nearly 5 percent more than it received a year ago. The sales tax allocation for May was on the rise for the 37th consecutive month but showed a slowdown in growth from recent months in Lubbock and statewide, Comptroller of Public Accounts Susan Combs announced Wednesday, May 8.

Police arrest 19-year-old in connection with Royal Palace shooting 05/08/13 - 10:10am

Dajmyn Poindexter charged with felony counts of aggravated assault

Lubbock police arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a shooting that left two people wounded during the weekend at a Central Lubbock nightclub. On Tuesday, May 7, Dajmyn Poindexter was charged with felony counts of aggravated assault after the shooting about 2:28 a.m. Sunday, May 5, outside the Royal Palace, 3511 Ave. Q, police Sgt. Jason Lewis said in a statement. According to police reports, a fight started inside the club and moved out into the parking lot, where someone opened fire on the gathered crowd.

LP&L rate hike a question of when, not if, council says 05/07/13 - 4:10pm

City Council to consider Utility Board's request for 9.7-percent rate increase

It’s not a question of if but when Lubbock Power & Light electric rates will go up, City Council members said of a recent request to raise rates 10 percent. Lubbock’s City Council will consider a proposed rate increase that could cost customers of Lubbock’s municipal utility an average $7 to $10 extra on their monthly utility bills, with LP&L requesting the rate take effect starting June 1. The proposed increase goes to the City Council for consideration at its meeting at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, May 9.
