The rebuilding process hasn’t gone quite the way the Lubbock High or Coronado tennis teams envisioned. After graduating nearly a dozen seniors from a squad that reached the state semifinals last year, Coronado is already ranked fourth in Class 5A — tying the program’s highest ever ranking. The Mustangs were also ranked fourth at the end of last season.

The Oklahoma commit was kept out of the starting lineup with an injury in his right shoulder – his throwing arm -- but suited up when the Mules entered halftime down a point. Washington made his presence immediately felt, completing a 57-yard touchdown pass to Isaias Guerra on the Mules’ third play from scrimmage to open the third quarter.

Each team runs a spread-style offense with a senior quarterback who is averaging 200-plus passing yards per game. Each team has three players who have rushed for at least 100 yards this season, and both squads average 200-plus yards on the ground. The Mules and the Eagles both finished the non-district season 3-0.

At halftime, the Eagles trailed 8-6 and had rushed for negative yards, stifled by Ralls’ stout linebacking corps. The Jackrabbits controlled the pace, owned the clock and came up with big plays when they needed. Then the wheels came off. “We just ran out of gas,” Ralls coach Tim James said. “You could see it. We had turnovers that killed us in the third quarter.”

The Lady Pirates had been thwarted by Denver City, Seminole and Abilene Wylie during a difficult week and desperately needed to get back on track. “We had no intensity,” sophomore setter Katelyn Stewart said of Cooper’s losing skid. “And we weren’t playing the same as we were last season. We just needed a win.”
