EUGENE, Ore. — Gil Roberts ran slower, but coach Wes Kittley still was satisfied.
The Texas Tech senior, one of a group of emerging collegiate stars in the 400 meters, finished third in his heat at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials on a cool, wet Friday afternoon at Hayward Field to qualify for today’s semifinals.
“I was very pleased that he controlled his race,” Kittley, the Red Raiders’ head coach, said after Roberts’ race with light rain falling. “He went out as slow as he has all year and didn’t exert a lot of energy. To get by that easily was awesome.”
