Young and old alike can cut a rug Valentine’s Day Weekend, thanks to several dances planned. The YWCA of Lubbock is sponsoring its third-annual Valentine’s father-daughter dance Sunday. “The goal is to create special memories between fathers and their little girls,” said communications director Jana Hunter. The dance also gives girls a chance to feel honored and special, contributing toward YWCA’s goal of empowering women, Hunter added.

Larry Viaille, president of the local chapter of the Christian Motorcyclists Association, says the group is what may seem an oxymoron to some: Christian bikers.

The Rev. Paul Lively says he has seen the stares — the anxious glances people sometimes give bikers. It’s the leather. The tattoos. The persona. The combination can make people nervous — even in some churches, Lively, says. Larry Viaille, president of the local chapter of the Christian Motorcyclists Association, says he has seen the looks, too. He has caught the sideways glances from curious onlookers surveying the picnic gatherings the association hosts in local parks. Some venture closer to inquire about the group.

The Lubbock Area United Way has exceeded its 2011 campaign fundraising goal, the nonprofit organization announced at a luncheon Tuesday.

The Lubbock Area United Way has exceeded its 2011 campaign fundraising goal, the nonprofit organization announced at a luncheon Tuesday. Since Aug. 25, campaign chairman Kevin McMahon has spearheaded the organization’s effort in raising $5,450,175, exceeding the campaign goal of $5,435,903. Eighty-six percent of funds raised will benefit Lubbock Area United Way’s 23 partner agencies, said Amy Berry, vice president of resource development.
