DALLAS — With a tug from Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Jason Terry and others, the Dallas Mavericks unveiled their championship banner minutes before opening this season against the team they knocked off in the NBA finals — LeBron James and the Miami Heat. The ceremony was supposed to have been held Nov. 1, but the lockout pushed it back. So after waiting until their 31st season to become champions for the first time, the Mavericks and their fans waited another 54 days.

A victory by the Giants eliminated the Eagles from the playoffs and turned the Dallas-New York game next weekend into a showdown to decide the NFC East title. The Cowboys said late Saturday that the game has been moved to prime time.

ARLINGTON — The first time the Cowboys and Giants played a prime-time game at Cowboys Stadium, things didn’t go so well for Tony Romo. It was the opener of the $1.2 billion palace and Romo disappointed an NFL-record crowd by throwing three interceptions in a last-second loss. The second time the Cowboys and Giants played in a prime-time game at Cowboys Stadium, things didn’t work out so well for Romo, either. He broke a collarbone and was done for the year; that loss dropped Dallas to 1-5 and pretty much ended the team’s season, too. Here they go again.

He joked about his short hair, showed how his twice-wounded left middle finger is healing and enjoyed the perk of holding a news conference while teammates sweated through conditioning drills. Yet as excited as Nowitzki is about trying to defend the championship he brought the Dallas Mavericks, he’s also curious about who is going to defend it with him.

IRVING — Upon further review, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett still sees nothing wrong with how he managed the end of regulation in a loss to Arizona. He insisted Monday there was no need to call a timeout after getting a first down at the 31-yard line with about 25 seconds left, even though Dallas could have run a few plays in hopes of setting up a shorter field goal.

DALLAS — Just last week, the lockout was sapping Jason Terry’s usual optimism. This was the first fall since he was in fifth grade, more than 20 years ago, that he wasn’t part of a basketball team. It was especially agonizing because it was his most anticipated season yet. Months after winning his first NBA championship, and the first for the Dallas Mavericks, he was supposed to be on the court with Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd, trying to defend their title.

The Cowboys returned to work Monday holding a four-game winning streak, a lead in the NFC East and a clear route to the playoffs. Their challenge is living up to the expectations they’ve raised. Coach Jason Garrett liked what he saw on the practice field. “I think our players came back from our three-day break with the right spirit about them, the right competitiveness, the right demeanor,” he said.
