With his New Deal team leading 5-1 in the first game of an area round series, Ramirez led off the fourth inning with a line-drive single to right that Laz Rodriguez couldn’t handle. As the outfielder chased the ball toward the fence, Ramirez sprinted around the bases to beat the relay throw and score a run that would prove valuable in a 6-3 victory.

The offseason carousel for the Texas Tech men’s basketball team may finally be nearing its end. Guard Kevin Wagner became the sixth Red Raider from last season’s roster to transfer on Wednesday. Wagner, the local product from Estacado who played 18 games as a freshman last season, will continue his career at McLennan Community College in Waco, his father Tony told The Avalanche-Journal. Wagner missed almost half of last season due to an injury to the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, but his father said the rehab is going well.

Former Tech guard Minnis lands at Rhode Island 05/11/12 - 5:17am

DeShon Minnis will transfer to Rhode Island, the former Texas Tech guard announced on his Twitter page Thursday. The move to the East Coast means Minnis, who is from the Philadelphia area, will continue his college career closer to home. Minnis averaged 3.1 points per game last season. He scored a career-high 12 points in Tech’s season opening win against Troy, and he scored 10 in a loss to Oklahoma State in the first round of the Big 12 Conference tournament.

Catcher Hewett a key component for Coronado 05/11/12 - 5:40am

Greg Hewett began his career as a catcher the way many young ballplayers do — with a coach asking for volunteers to play baseball’s most grueling position. “I was in Little League, about 9 or 10 years old,” Hewett said. “I think I was maybe playing shortstop first. Then (a coach) asked who wanted to play catcher, and I told him I would.” Hewett found success behind the plate sooner than most, catching for the 2007 Western Little League All-Star team that made a run all the way to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
