The Golden Gophers' top player is trying to replace the memory of a costly mistake during a bowl game three years ago

HOUSTON — MarQueis Gray has thought about the play numerous times throughout his career at Minnesota, but the memories have stormed back even stronger as the Golden Gophers prepare for another bowl game. The last time Minnesota ventured into the postseason was in 2009, when it faced Iowa State in the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. Gray was a freshman at the time, and with his team trailing, 14-13, with about four minutes left in the fourth quarter, he went into the backfield to take a snap out of the wildcat formation.

HOUSTON — LaAdrian Waddle was met with a cold reality on Christmas morning inside Rice Stadium: The 6-foot-6, 330-pound Texas Tech senior offensive tackle is not going to make it as an NFL kicker. During a moment of levity toward the end of Tech’s rain-soaked bowl practice Tuesday, Waddle booted an impromptu field-goal attempt that darted woefully off target, drawing a chorus of laughter from his teammates.

HOUSTON — It certainly didn’t seem like Christmas Eve on Monday at Rice Stadium, where Texas Tech continued its preparations for Friday’s Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas against Minnesota. Any hopes for a winter wonderland were destroyed by a warm, humid climate with temperatures nearing the mid-70s, but the Red Raiders weren’t complaining.

Red Raiders drop their third straight game, fourth in the last five

Texas Tech was chipping away, putting itself in position for one final run on Saturday against Arizona State. Then Jahii Carson took over. The ASU freshman point guard hit a 3-pointer, then relentlessly attacked the rim, ripping off a personal 11-2 run that helped the Sun Devils cruise to a 77-62 win inside United Spirit Arena. “It’s a great luxury,” ASU coach Herb Sendek said. “He’s a tremendous player. He plays with a lot of poise and composure. We all feed off his penetration and his energy.”

Hays was Baylor OC for two seasons; at West Texas A&M for four

Lee Hays once made visits to Texas Tech football practices to take notes on what Mike Leach’s team was doing while Hays was a West Texas A&M assistant. Now it appears he’ll be part of the Tech program. Tech has hired Hays to coach offensive line, according to a Houston television station. KRIV-TV sports director Mark Berman reported Friday that Houston coach Tony Levine confirmed that Hays, the Cougars’ offensive line coach this season, had accepted the job with the Red Raiders.

Senior guard is playing fewer minutes but still believes he can be a valuable asset for Tech

Texas Tech guard Ty Nurse logged a season-high in minutes against Alabama on Wednesday with 24. That would have been merely a warm-up a year ago. Nurse led Texas Tech with 30.2 minutes played per game last season, but with a heavy influx of new talent at the guard position — Tech’s recruiting class included five backcourt players — the senior has become more of a role player for the Red Raiders this season. But don’t expect Nurse to complain about reduced playing time.

As he walked down from a podium following his introduction as Texas Tech’s interim basketball coach on Oct. 4, Chris Walker was asked by a reporter what his coaching style would look like when his new team hit the floor. The gist of his response: You won’t see us scoring 58 points per game. That was Tech’s offensive clip a season ago, a cringe-worthy number that equated to dead last in the Big 12 Conference. Texas Tech, during the second half of its 66-62 loss on Wednesday inside United Spirit Arena, had the look of a team that can compete in the Big 12 Conference this season. Problem is, the Red Raiders looked like anything but that in the first — and it wasn’t the first time. “One of our coaches said the other day that we’ve played one half every game,” Tech coach Chris Walker said. “There’s not been a game where we put two solid halves together to where we could say we can really go in and beat a Big 12 team at home or on the road. That’s what we’re working toward.”

Mike Greer began training for triathlon races almost three decades ago for the same reason many gravitate toward the sport. “When I came into the sport, it was a way to keep myself in shape,” Greer said. “I wanted to have more longevity in athletics. I had no idea what it would entail.”
