As cities like Austin gain recognition for music festivals and budding new artists, one Lubbock music lover and venue owner said he wants the same for artists who call the South Plains home. Matthew Yugovich, president of Great Western Adventures, said his company's open-air venue, The Motherland, gives local artists a place to be heard and appreciated by their peers and community.

Local band Mystery Stain plays forgotten favorites\n 05/13/11 - 10:04am

Playing the big hits just isn’t their thing. Instead, local cover band Mystery Stain would rather take their audience down memory lane with songs that don’t typically make artists’ greatest hits albums. “We’re more like the b-side of the tape from your favorite artists,” said bass player Jonathan Smither. Mystery Stain will perform Saturday at 10 p.m. at The Spoon, also known as the Texas Café and Bar, 3604 50th St., and there is a $5 cover.

Ransom Canyon property owners host Kentucky Derby party 05/06/11 - 11:06am

The Ransom Canyon Property Owners association will host a “Kentucky Derby Party,” from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Ransom Canyon Ranch House, located at East Lake Shore Drive. Scorpie White of Wolfforth, said she and her husband travel frequently for his job, but she will be in town for the party. “It’s going to be a real neat evening,” White said. “I’m glad I’m going to be in town for this first one, and hopefully they get to do it every year.” Post-party activities will begin at 6 p.m. A $25 admission will cover food and beverage for the evening.

Bluegrass concert to raise funds for Liberty Learning Center at Hope Shalom 05/06/11 - 10:51am

On the third floor of the HOPE Community of Shalom Inc. building there are quotes on the walls from people like Franklin D. Roosevelt and Tupac Shakur. They are meant to inspire the students of Liberty Learning Center, an alternative high school dedicated to giving troubled teens a chance at earning a high school diploma. The center is just one of several organizations assisted by the HOPE Community of Shalom Inc.
