Recently there was an article in the paper about Lubbock being on a list of bad drivers. As a pedestrian I have to agree. Unfortunately, careless drivers almost hit me several times a week.
I just checked the Driver Manual online and found Lubbock does have the same rules other cities have. Drivers must look both ways before going through an intersection or pulling into or out of a parking lot. They must look both ways before making a turn.
Pedestrians have the right of way with a walk signal or if the light turns green and the pedestrian is in a marked crosswalk. Drivers must stop before the stop sign (not in front) and may not block sidewalks or streets.
There are many drivers who do obey the rules, but too many who don’t. My move here was delayed for eight months of recovery after a driver hit me while I was in a crosswalk with a walk signal. I was hospitalized for seven weeks and was permanently disabled by a careless driver.
I doubt if careless drivers will read this letter; so please remind your family, friends and co-workers to always look both ways, keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel and pay attention to your driving at all times.
Nobody wants to be responsible for killing or hurting another person.

HPP & OTP is producing a video that addresses this particular issue, bad parking & aggressive drivers. I felt the good drivers of Lubbock deserved a voice and we have created a voice through video for those frustrated with highly irresponsible drivers that make the daily commutes so dangerous in Lubbock. The show chronicles drivers both good and bad and attempts to educate through awareness. The first installment was for March 2012 and was posted April 1st. Here's a link to the 30 minute show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIAp-1aPkU8 There will be a new show posted to that YouTube channel on the 1st of each month. Enjoy and be safe.
