Sean Miller serves as external vice president of Texas Tech American Society of Mechanical Engineers student chapter

The Texas Tech Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering named Sean Miller the recipient of the McAuley Distinguished Engineering Student Award for 2013. This award, provided by members of the Whitacre College of Engineering Dean’s Council, is named in memory of James A. McAuley, an active member of the Dean’s Council, and a Texas Tech Distinguished Engineer, according to a Tech news release.

Zachariah Hurley will intern in Washington, D.C. this summer

Lubbockite selected for government intern Texas Tech College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources officials announced Zachariah Hurley was selected for an internship in Washington, D.C., for the summer 2013 academic semester. The college established the Government Internship Program in the spring of 1998. The program offers students the opportunity to experience day-to-day government operations, while working as interns to U.S. senators and representatives and Texas legislators, according to a news release from the college.

Sign to be located along north side of Marsha Sharp Freeway

The Texas Tech System Board of Regents authorized one-eighth of an acre of Tech land to be used for a co-branded monument sign between University Medical Center and the Tech Health Sciences Center. UMC will construct a monument sign 77 feet long and at most 13 feet high along the north side of the Marsha Sharp Freeway, just west of the pedestrian bridge near the Texas Tech Parkway north exit ramp, according to the regents agenda. The sign will highlight both UMC and TTUHSC.

Changes streamline curriculum

Texas Tech will consolidate four bachelor’s programs in the department of classical and modern languages and literatures in the College of Arts and Sciences and four master’s programs in the same department. The university will consolidate its bachelor of arts in classics, French, German and Russian area studies into a single bachelor of arts in languages and cultures in the College of Arts and Sciences. Tech also will consolidate the master of arts in applied linguistics, classics, French and German into a single master of arts in languages and cultures.

Plans are moving forward for Texas Tech’s new student housing complex, but adjustments to the stage I design budget for the TTU Research & Technology Park have been stalled. The Texas Tech System Board of Regents met Thursday, May 16, and Friday, May 17, in Lubbock. New residence complex Tech President-elect Duane Nellis said housing on campus is in high demand.

Tuition and fees across the Texas Tech System will not increase for the 2013-14 school year. The Tech System Board of Regents voted Friday, May 17, to keep tuition and mandatory fees constant for in-state, undergraduate students enrolled in 15 semester credit hours at each of its component institutions: Tech, Angelo State University and the Tech Health Sciences Center.

Rick Perry in a struggle between the Legislature and the executive office over higher education. Regents slated to discuss fixed tuition at Angelo State, Texas Tech

The Texas Tech System Board of Regents will meet today, May 16, and Friday, May 17, at the Tech Health Sciences Center. This will be the first Lubbock meeting for newly appointed regents John D. Esparza of Austin and Tim Lancaster of Abilene. The finance and administration committee is slated to discuss fixed tuition rates. The board will vote on directing Angelo State University and Tech to study and present a plan for permitting new students entering in fall 2014 to opt into a fixed tuition and fee contract, according to the agenda.
