A look at upcoming elections in the South Plains

On May 11, thousands of West Texans will go to the polls to cast their ballots in a variety of local elections. Thursday, March 12, was the first day for voters to request a ballot by mail. Thursday, April 11, is the last day to register to vote. Monday, April 29, is the first day to cast ballots in early voting in person. The 2012 elections drove home trends that have been embedded in the fine print of birth and death rates, immigration statistics and census charts for years. America is rapidly getting more diverse, and, more gradually, so is its electorate. Nonwhites made up 28 percent of the electorate this year, compared with 20 percent in 2000. Much of that growth is coming from Hispanics.
