Lubbock City Councilman Paul Beane maintained his fundraising lead over challenger Jim Gerlt in their race for District 4’s council seat, extended by a runoff election set for Saturday.
Beane outpaced Gerlt in fundraising from May 3 through June 13, taking in $11,125 compared to about $8,380 in the challenger’s coffers, according to campaign finance reports released by the city secretary’s office.
That puts Beane at about $36,070 raised since the beginning of the year compared to Gerlt’s $20,640.
Both candidates met the filing deadline for the eight-day report prior to the runoff election.
Gerlt had about 50 percent more donations, receiving 40 compared to Beane’s 29 during the last filing period before the election.
A breakdown of the money raised and spent by the candidates shows Beane received support from the McDougal family — former Mayor Marc McDougal, Mike McDougal and Delbert McDougal contributed a combined $750 to Beane’s re-election campaign during the runoff.
Beane’s largest contribution of the period, $1,500, came from the City Bank-associated WTBG PAC.
Gerlt received support from former Lubbock Mayor Windy Sitton, who, along with Frank Sitton, donated $250 and from a Todd Klein (not the District 3 Councilman), who donated $100.
Gerlt had several contributions of $500, and one of $700, but nothing from a PAC or organization and no contributions of more than $700.
Beane and Gerlt emerged from a three-man race May 12 with challenger Dwight Fullingim.
