AUSTIN (AP) — Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst says more money is needed for highways even as Texas faces a projected budget shortfall of at least $15 billion for the next two years.
Republican Dewhurst, who leads the Texas Senate and has been mentioned as a possible candidate to replace GOP U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, told The Dallas Morning News in an interview published Monday that increased funding is necessary, especially in the state’s biggest and most traffic-clogged cities. Dewhurst said he would not support a tax hike but that vehicle registration fees could be increased.
