Local and area law enforcement officers on Wednesday morning will start their run to Arlington in support of the Special Olympics.
Officials plan to kick off the annual Torch Run at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center at about 8 a.m. The fun run with the athletes will start at about 8:15 a.m.
They will run down Avenue Q to the Byron Martin Center, at 34th Street and Avenue Q, where officers will take off to Arlington.
Residents generally stand along the streets to cheer on the runners.
Law enforcement personnel will attend the opening ceremonies for the Special Olympics on Friday night.
Lubbock Police, the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, Plainview Police and adult probation officers will participate in the run.
To support the Special Olympics, call 749-7000.

I had seen some officers that acted like they could qualify to participate in the Special Olympics, but it is good to see that others agree with my evaluation.
Just to be on the safe side, after the Special Olympics are over, new IQ tests should be administered to all those on any government payroll within all of Lubbock County. If our municipal workers are going to have room temperature IQ, the room had better be darn hot.
Law Enforcement
The amount of knowledge and studying a Police Officer has to complete to wear that badge is amazing. We as the general public should respect the individual willing to do what it takes to be a law enforcement officer. Comments like they are stupid and dumb are pointless and uneducated in themselves.
Shut it...
Dear Solearth-
I am of the opinion that it's ok for someone to pick on my little brother, but as soon as someone else does it, I am the first one to get defensive. You've struck a nerve with me (and many more that might read your moronic post). I am the proud sister of a LPD officer. He is the one that will protect you when you need to be protected. He is the one that went through extreme training to prepare to defend people like you. He is the one that is fulfilling his life long dream of serving and protecting...even though people like you don't fully appreciate what he does for a living. He's the one that puts his life on the line day in and day out to serve arrest warrants, he deals with hardened criminals, and he gets armed and dangerous individuals off the streets of Lubbock so that people like you are out of harms way. So before you spout off again, consider all that the fine men and women in blue do...for people like you. Oh, and how dare you insult those that are involved in Special Olympics. But that's a post for another time. Have a blessed day, Solearth.
police academy
17 weeks. one semester. that's all. then they have the power to kill you.
As a professional law
As a professional law enforcement officer with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, minor in psychology, too many advanced certifications and accreditations to list from the nation’s top law enforcement academy's, fifteen years of LE experience and the father of a disabled child, Solearth, I find you to be sophomoric, petty and rather small.
