DAEGU, South Korea -- Jason Young, a former Texas Tech athlete and assistant strength coach, advanced to the final 12 of the discus competition early Monday at the IAAF World Championships.

Young, who was the top-ranked discus thrower in the United States in 2010, is the last American left in the competition. He threw 207 feet, 2 inches Monday. That was good for seventh in his 16-man section and, once the second section was complete, was good enough to advance.

The final 12 throwers will square off at 5:55 a.m. CST Tuesday, which is 7:55 p.m. Tuesday in Daegu.

The 30-year-old Young came to Tech from Dallas Samuell. He was a two-time runner-up in the U.S. outdoor championships, most recently this year in Eugene, Ore.
