A Texas Tech spokesman denied two reports Tuesday that Chad Glasgow is out as defensive coordinator of the Red Raiders.

“Chad Glasgow has not been fired and is still on our coaching staff,” said Blayne Beal, Tech’s associate athletic director for media relations.

CBSSports.com’s Bruce Feldman posted on Twitter: “Just heard that Tommy Tuberville has fired Texas Tech DC Chad Glasgow. That’s fourth assistant to go this offseason there.”

A short time later, the web site FootballScoop.com posted: “Bruce Feldman just reported that Tommy Tuberville has released defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow. We were told a slightly different version; but regardless it looks like Glasgow will be moving on. Bright young coach.”

Beal said he confirmed with Tuberville after the reports that Glasgow has not been fired.

“I have confirmed that,” Beal said, “and I will even confirm that he will not be fired. He has not been fired, and he has not resigned.”

Tuberville did not answer calls placed to his cell phone and did not immediately respond to a voice-mail message.

Earlier this month, Feldman reported that Tuberville had “canned” three assistants. Tuberville initially denied the report, but Tech acknowledged three days later that two assistants were dismissed and another reassigned.

Glasgow, 39, was hired by Tech in January after 10 years as a position coach at TCU. Tech gave up an average of 46 points in Big 12 Conference games this season, and the Red Raiders ranked in the bottom 10 in the nation in rushing defense, pass efficiency defense, total defense and scoring defense.

Even if Glasgow’s status is unchanged, it appears the defense could be changing. Two players who committed to the Red Raiders last week said they were told the team is switching from the 4-2-5 it ran this year back to a 4-3 defense.

“(Defensive ends) coach (Robert) Prunty was talking to me when we were watching film at Tech over the weekend,” Riverside (Calif.) Community College defensive end Lee Adams said. “He said, yeah, they’re actually going to a 4-3 this year. He said they’re going to switch it to a base 4-3 instead of a 4-2-5 because it helps out the run (defense).”

Adams’ teammate, Riverside linebacker Will Smith, said last week that he understood the Raiders plan to run a 4-3.

“That’s what I played in junior college,” Smith said. “They run a 4-3, so it’s the same defense I ran here at junior college.”

Between last Wednesday and Sunday, Tech received oral commitments from seven junior-college players, all of whom plan to transfer to Tech at mid-term. Today is the first day such players can sign financial-aid agreements with their new schools.

Several of those players said the reports regarding Glasgow would not change their decision.

“I feel like this: Coaches come and go,” said Chris Payne, a linebacker from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. “Even if I get there, I never know what coaches I might get. He’s pretty cool and all, but I don’t bank on a coach being there for long, so it’s whatever. You’ve just got to stick with your teammates through tough times and continue balling.”

Austin Stewart, a safety from Pierce (Calif.) College, said he’ll sign with Tech regardless, because he wants to play in the Big 12 Conference.

“All I can say is, if he’s going to be there, I’m going to perform,” Stewart said. “If not for him, I’m going to do the same thing for another coach. That’s the way I look at it.”

Stewart picked Tech over SMU. He said SMU’s staff tried to dissuade him from going to Tech because of the staff changes.

Stewart said, “They told me before I committed Saturday, they were trying to say, ‘Yeah, the defensive line coach got fired. The defensive backs coach is getting fired. We’re all stable here. We’re a good school.’ I still had my mind set on Texas Tech. It’s the Big 12.”

Stewart and Adams both said they visited with Glasgow while they took campus visits at Tech last weekend.

“We were joking around,” Adams said. “He was showing us how to line dance and stuff. He’s a great coach. He’s very friendly.”

Like the others, Adams said the reports swirling Tuesday won’t keep him from coming to Tech.

“It wasn’t just one coach that made me commit there,” Adams said. “It was the coaching staff as a whole. If one coach was to leave, my position coach would still be there. That’s the coach I felt influenced me the most, him and coach Tuberville. I’m a Red Raider. There’s nothing going to change my decision.”

Coaches

I have been pretty tough on people about negative comments on here about the program, Hance, Tech, etc. But this kind of mess is unnecessary and should not be allowed to happen. First of all, there's a "deep throat" somewhere in the system that is feeding internal thoughts and discussions to national media outlets. That needs to stop or "thoughts and discussions" should be kept private between the two or three decision makers until they are ready to make an announcement and the announcement needs to come from Tech, not some media hack. Second, if the report is not true, TUBERVILLE needs to come out immediately and refute it definitively, not wishy-wash around like he did with the other three coaches he let go (which was a good move in my opinion). People can always deal with the truth a lot better than double-speak and politically correct B.S. There is absolutely no excuse for letting this go almost 24 hours now with no response from the head coach or athletic director. If it's true, SAY SO, if not SAY THAT. But SAY SOMETHING. This "he's on the road recruiting" is a crock and everybody knows it. Get the cards on the table Tech - Tubberville. You are feeding the fire that your detractors have kept going for 2 years now. DO SOMETHING and get in front of the process for a change instead of running along behind it like the defense did on the field all year!!

This is just getting embarrassing.

The staff is in total disarray. So much turnover for yr 3. I thought we were paying $2million/yr for a veteran/experienced coach. This just looks awful. If Glascow is fired/resigns then Tubs needs to make a $400K donation to the RRC for his colossal mistake. Can't believe this is the current state of Tech football. We must be the laughing stock of the Big12. All of this is self-inflicted damage done to appease the ego of one well connected booster. Was it worth it? Hance backed the wrong guy in Dec 2009.

You might want to check with KLBK

They say he's out.

The laughing stock of the Big 12 is t-shirt fans like yourself that come on here at every chance to bash the university. Being negative 24/7 must really feel good to you. The team is not in disarray, Turn over happens every year. YOU just magnify it . Bad luck & major injuries led to a disappointing season for everyone who's a fan. Your actions are just hurting the program, but regaardless Tech will survive regardless of the amount of crap you and your cronies spew,

Keep Glasgow

not exactly sure whats going on here. I think Coach Glas should be given a longer chance. Perhaps he chose to go over a demotion... maybe he and coach Tubs just parted ways after Tubs evidently returning to 4-3 base. Who knows exactly what yet. But he is a great young coach and I think it might be a mistake to let him go. Course coach Tubs is our man and he I think has had enough of 66 pt losses. He has had enough time I guess to decide on a different course for us and I trust him.

Just beat the helloutof Texas next yr!!!

Keep Glasgow

Not sure exactly whats going on yet, but I hope we keep this fine young coach. Course if Tommy wants changes he may not have accepted a lateral move or demotion so probably he is gone. Tommy is tired of 66 pt loses and so am I.

TECH PLAYERS COULDN'T TACKLE

I don't know if it's the co-ordinators, assistants, position coaches, or what. There seems to be too many chiefs & not enough indians for the kids to be taught to tackle.

I read that Tech doesn't allow tackling after the players report for fall practices. And think that decision is hurting instead of helping the defense.

@bigd

You can go back to the spaeth Christmas party now. You have done your job trying to bolster a ridiculous coaching staff. The whole Tech footbvall program is in the toilet because of the moves that Hance made with the help of Craig James. You can go work on his campaign now. Next year at this time you can complain how injuries hurtthe James campaign and it was not his fault nobody voted for him.

It is time that the football program at Tech is resurrected with real coaches and not $400K defensive coordinators who allow 66, 66 and 51 points against them during a 5 and 7 season.

Fire Tubberville

The only coaching change I care about is firing Tubberville. Problem starts at the top! He has a history of firing assistants when things aren't going well...AND THINGS ARE NOT GOING WELL! Auburn finally had enough and fired him and we're the dummies that hired him. We need to stop this train wreck sooner rather than later and FIRE TUBBERVILLE! I know some of you are getting tired of hearing this, but until it happens you're going to keep hearing it.

Experience of New Coach

I noticed that Lovett, the new Defensive Backs Coach has 20 years of experience as a coach and quite a few years as a defensive coordinator. So I am wondering if this supposed rumor of Glasgow being fired is based somewhat on speculation that Lovett would replace him. But it makes since to me to keep Glasgow as the DC, a rising young coach, especially when it comes to recruiting. Lovett's knowledge would still be available.

Tired of the drama

The coaching staff had more excuses this year than the linebackers had tackles.

@ Wazoo

No contact practices not only hurt performance they lead to more injuries. You play like you practice in any endeavor. If you don't practice protecting yourself, you won't do it in a game either.

You don't want a coach who brutalizes players in practice with "bull in the ring" drills or other such junk. But you have to practice full speed a fair amount of the time or you will have injury problems.

You see this in the NFL also. Season-ending injuries have increased for QBs as contact in practices has been eliminated.

Simply pathetic!....That's

If Glas is not fired then

If Glas is not fired then Tuberville needs to make a statement. My guess is Chad is gone. But what the heck do I know right?

Reap what you sow...

How is Tubbs considered a defensive genius when he hasn't coached it for many years, all he ever does is hire young coordinators meddles with what their doing and when it turns to crap he blames/ fires them. Tubbs is a used car salesman at best. 3 D coordinators in 3 years and going JUCO with a third of the recruiting class- a desperate coach grasping for a miracle. Flush the turd because you sure can't polish it!

If Glasgow's not fired then it's really too bad!

Because he honestly doesn't need to be here. Forget that bright young coach crap! He can't coach. He couldn't coach tackling, or didn't. He couldn't get out of the 4-2-5 to save his life and do something differently on the fly to stop the run! He's not qualified or good, simple as that. And if he's so handicapped by Tuberville to not be able to do his job then Tuberville should be fired ASAP, which will likely happen after next year anyway.

And to all the clowns out there that hate Leach and continued to bash that guy and say his job hunting hurt recruiting each year, HA! What do you think about all this? This is much worse than any of his prospective job seeking! This is crippling this program, and Tuberville does even more damage in that regard!

Please watch your language

We have no problem what your position is on Tech football, pro, con and inbetween and we let you say it ... but no cuss words ... and that also means part of the word using letters and part of the word using punctuation marks ...

Hope he isn't gone....

Glasgow needs TIME before we decide his fate. How many freshmen played on the defense this year? How can having a 4th coordinator in as many years going to help this unit? It doesn't matter who you have out there if you only give him ONE stinking year to work a miracle.

Look at Oklahoma State for example, their D sucked when their coordinator first got there. It improved DRAMATICALLY the next seasons because they had continuity.

Am I happy w/the D? Heck no, but let's (hopefully) give the guy some time before we give him the axe. Also, wasn't this his first year as an actual defensive coordinator? I guess everyone here did an awesome job the first year they were taking on a new position.

I read the terms and it's not clear ... THAT'S WHY I REPOSTED THEM ... so you might wanna add to the terms to clarify what you're getting at here ...

Also ... I will now assume that any post with words like "dang" , "gosh darn", "son of a gun", "geez", "fudge", "beach", "crap" ect. ect. will be censored since that is also a way of saying a CURSE WORD without actually saying it.

Having said that, I appreciate this website letting us give feedback and discuss news that is reported on this website. Merry Christmas.
