Texas Tech officials confirmed Thursday that defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow is leaving the staff, a move that had been the subject of speculation for more than a week.

"Texas Tech and Chad Glasgow have come to a mutual agreement that he will no longer remain on the Texas Tech football coaching staff," Tech spokesman Blayne Beal said.

Beal declined to characterize the action as a resignation or a dismissal, reiterating it was "a mutual agreement on both parties."

In 2012, Tech will have a different defensive coordinator for the fourth year in a row. Glasgow followed James Willis, who was defensive coordinator in 2010. Ruffin McNeill was defensive coordinator on the Mike Leach staff from early in the 2007 season through 2009 before Leach was fired.

The 39-year-old Glasgow was hired in January from TCU, where he had been a safeties coach for 10 years. In his one season running the Tech defense, the Red Raiders ranked 120th and last in the nation in rushing defense, 113th in pass efficiency defense, 115th in total defense and 117th in scoring defense.

Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt called Glasgow "a talented young professional and coach" who "will be a tremendous asset for the right progam."

"It's hard to explain at times why change is inevitable and things just don't work," Hocutt said. "The timing and fit's not right. It was a mutual conversation and, ultimately, a mutual decision that it was in the best interests for our football program and in the best interests of Chad personally and professionally to part ways. Those are never easy conversations to engage in for either side, but we wish him only the best."

No one was immediately designated to take over as defensive coordinator. One newly hired staffer, defensive backs coach John Lovett, has had coordinator-level experience under Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville. Lovett was Tuberville's defensive backs coach from 1995 through 1998 at Mississippi and was his defensive coordinator from 1999 through 2001 at Auburn.

However, Hocutt said he believes the next coordinator will not come from the current staff.

"Right now, it's my understanding that Tommy's going to look outside," Hocutt said. "Obviously, things can change. At this time, I know his focus is from outside the current program."

CBSSports.com's Bruce Feldman reported via Twitter last week that Glasgow had been fired, and the web site FootballScoop.com reported that Glasgow was leaving the staff. At the time, Tech denied Glasgow had been fired or resigned.

Beal stood by Tech's position Thursday.

"That is untrue," he said of the initial reports. "We were able to come to an agreement this morning. In personnel matters, we can only confirm what is true, not rumors, not what is being discussed."

Beal said Glasgow’s departure was settled over a period of several days. In addition to Glasgow and  Tuberville, Beal said Hocutt was involved in the discussions because it was a personnel matter.

“The holidays slowed the process down,” Beal said. “Both parties were able to discuss the situation at length this week, and we were able to come to an agreement on this today.”

The initial rumblings surrounding Glasgow came on Dec. 20, the day before mid-term transfers could sign with new schools. On Dec. 21, the Red Raiders signed nine newcomers, but lost a tug-of-war with Oklahoma for Pierce (Calif.) College cornerback Kass Everett.

During a Dec. 21 ceremony with several teammates at his school, Everett put on a Tech cap and announced he would be a Red Raider. But four hours later, he signed his official paperwork with OU and faxed it in.

Everett later told SoonerNation that he tried several times to reach Glasgow that afternoon, but believed Glasgow’s phone had been disconnected. He told SoonerNation he did not try to reach any other Tech coaches.

Beal said Thursday he did not know whether Glasgow’s university-issued cell phone had been disconnected during the time in question.

Glasgow is the fourth assistant who won't be back from this year's 5-7 team. Tuberville fired offensive line coach Matt Moore and cornerbacks coach Otis Mounds, and defensive line coach Sam McElroy was reassigned.

Tuberville has hired Jim Turner off the Texas A&M staff to be offensive line coach and has hired one of his long-time assistants, Terry Price, as the defensive line coach.

about time

After losing a important recruit, Tech finally decides to announce this, how incompetent is that.

Accountability should lie with Tuberville

Tuberville and his supporters argue that he needs time to implement his style and with his hand picked assistants.

Why does he not give these assitants the same courtesy, and allow them time to develop their philosophies? Hypocrisy at its finest. After all, Tuberville HIRED THEM, seems his ability to evaluate quality candidates is lacking.

Tubs couldn't find his own rear end if we handed him a rake.

2010-Willis and the 3-4 Defense to defend the spread O. 2011-Glasgow and the 4-2-5 Defense to defend the spread O. 2012-Some yet to be named sucker and the 4-3 Defense to defend the spread O.

Tubs has a history of throwing his aides under the bus. It's time for Raider nation to demand a change from this incompetence and get someone in here who has a plan that doesn't change every 12 months. Poor hires and quick triggers are a sign of how inept Tubs truly is. The grasping of straws has begun. Seriously, how can anyone truly defend him or how this fiasco was handled?

Lies

There are more lies coming out of the Tech administration than ever. Don Williams wrote two articles based on the lies that Blayne Beal told before Christmas.

Now, Beal is saying that Glasgow is leaving under mutual agreement. What does that mean? Does he get a bonus to leave? Does he have time left on his contract that Tech bought him out of? Was he fired with cause and received no compensation? This whole press release reeks of hance and his two faced sidestepping of the issues. Don Williams, you need to find out what the terms of the termination are and let us know.

Obviously Glasgow was not able to perform the duties he was hired for. Whether those duties were to be a yes man to Tuberville or to win games. He obviously did not succeed.

Until Tech cleans out the administration building and gets rid of reverend chancellor Kent (failed republican lobbyist and politician) Hance, Tech will never be a tier 2 much less a tier 1 school.

TechAlum

Tubs hired them, gave them a fair chance, evaluated them & if needed he let them go. What's wrong with cTT doing his job. CG had a good resume, the others did too! Remember Manny Matsakis. After leaving TTU Matsakis served only one season as the Bobcats head coach compiling a 4-8 record, Boy that Leach made a good hire, wouldn't even fire him. Manny went to SWTSU and got them in hot water with the NCAA. What about the wonderful DC Leach hired, Lyle Setencich Yet another great hire. It was hard to fire your very on GOB, but the fans did yell enough to get it done after the oSu fiasco. Now cTT fires a DC after a similar occurance & people are griping. There's no pleasing the faithless.

Tech's Koolaid Spin Machine takes another hit!

I remember the days when what Tech said was followed up by quick and truthful facts - I guess the incompetence and bumbling by the Tech Koolaid Machine has hurt its credibility once again. All we heard last week was that Glasgow was still on staff and denial of rumors....then it was published that Tech lost a prized recruit because he could not get Glasgow to answer his calls....now, we heard this news at long last....I guess this is proof that we just can't trust anything that Tech says now..

Big D

Why are you bringing Washington State's head coach and Texas State's former head coach into the discusison?

Typical of Tubs and his supporters, they seem hell bent on bashing his predecessor with any chance they get, in an effort to deflect attention from the circus that is Tech's football program.

oSu fiasco?? Umm..I believe that would better describe this year's game in which we never showed up on EITHER side of the ball.

I know that you must blindly support Tubs, please take a step back and truly evaluate how poor of a job he has done over the past 24 months. I agree with one of your comments: cTT made a hire, evaluated them, and decided to make a change. My question is: At what point does the fan base start putting pressure on the powers that be to evaluate & show Tubs the way out of town? He seems to be fond of holding his assistants accountable....I think he should be held responsible for poor hires & performances too.

Don Williams

Is just a mouthpiece for the Hance administration. Nothing more than a talking head. Honestly when is the last time we had any news from him that wasn't a regurgitation of the TTU PR office? Plus......I bet he votes for Craig James come election day!

Smoke and Pancake? Cigar and

Smoke and Pancake? Cigar and Waffle? No? Pipe and a crepe? No? Bong and a blintze? No? Then there is no pleasing you.... Ranking last in the nation is room enough for a release, firing, or mutual agreement. It's all Hance's fault, and the terrorizers, and maybe Global Warming!

I agree

I agree it is time for a release, let's help Tubby pack this afternoon.

Oh wait I forgot he gets a free pass in all this.

CG

Glasgow was obviously in over his head as a DC. But the real problem with Tech is the horrible coaches (*cough cough Tommy Tubs*) and the Hance administration. How can a successful team with loads of talent be driven into the ground in less than 3 years?! Oh right....I remember.....the James clan/Hance/Sowell/etc.

let's see

Who was in charge of hiring this Glasgow last January?

Whoever was involved in that was not thinking of the best interests of Tech football.

Shame on them.

Glasgow

Glasgow was the safeties coach at TCU for ten years. If he was such a hot coah, wouldn't he have been promoted at TCU.

I see the Spaethites are on board tying to muddy the water. Bigd is tying to say that we are not satisfied and are griping that Tuber fired Glasgow. I am gripin g that Tuber ever hired a safeties coach as a DC. And, for the recorde, this is not bashing Texas or Tech. This is calling it like it is. Hance needs to go and take Tuber with him.

I have no what Redraiderforlife is babbling about. Maybe he needs a smoke?

What we are talking about is correcting the horrible situation at Tech.

Tech alum. You are correct. Bigd was the only person trying to redirect the conversation by bringing up past isssues as opposed to adressing the pitiful problem Tech has.

I still want to know how much money Glasgow left with. Don William, do your job and find out.

Typical Leeches

Keep bashing the current staff. You're just hurting the school. cTT was hired to do a job. He inherited a demoralized team. Remember U of H fiasco and the post activity of the players reaction when the current Wazzu coach threw the team under the bus. The same team that just needed a 3 point field goal & a pompus egotistical coach that refused & went for it on forth and goal with a QB sneak that hadn't worked in 10 years he was employed? A team of athletes that were fair at best and had no defensive skills. It will be awhile for ANY coach to rebuild that side of the ball. 50 yrs of watching TTU football tells me to be patient. 3 BTW Leech was wrong. There's 4 sides of the ball not 3. #4 is coaching. He never took responsibility even for AJ. So if you're going to throw stones at c you might look at the ones you haven't thrown at ML.

@bigd

I am not going to get into a dialog with you. Spaeth has hired you to spin this in Hces favor and it won't work.

The only people hurting Tech and Texas are the hancers and the PR people that work for hance.

How much did Glasgow walk away with from Tech. This is what is important to the taxpayers and tuition payers at Tech.

Big Dilusion

False Texas Tech loyalty is finally being revealed for what it really is, just DILUSION. Maybe that is what BigD stands for, Big Dilusion. Standing behind Texas Tech does not mean allowing its representatives to simply lie without complaint from its students, area citizens and alumni, or for that matter third parties with no dog in the fight. Tech is making itself out to be a full fledged JOKE, denying the Feldman tweets twice now. Tubs will probably get on Fox News tonight and say "fool me once, fool me twice....oooops!" and George W. and Rick Perry are squarely in the wheelhouse of our lobbyist Hance. Please, let's not let Texas Tech become like those idiots. Real loyalty requires getting rid of those who are tearing apart, destroying and lying via spin and lobbying at every turn. BigD should be awfully proud of his beloved loyalty, it is at least proportionate to the amount of amazement the rest of us feel at blindly defending the wrongdoers. I never thought it possible that Soviet propoganda or North Korean propoganda actually worked on people, but I guess there are people out there honestly buying the BS from Texas Tech, Don W and all the local media suck ups. Maybe that Hance chapel was a good idea because only God can explain that.

Mass Comm students

Notice how the AJ uses its headlines, by suggesting that it was Chad Glasgow is "leaving" the staff. ESPN and MY FOX Lubbock did the same thing, but look for the more honest places to get it done accurately. Putting the active verb on Glasgow gives the impression it was his call and his action.

As if it was Chad Glasgow's decision to stop being the defensive coordinator at Texas Tech?

That is such horse hockey and everyone knows that. Accurate headlines would be Texas Tech and DC Chad Glasgow Agree to Separate, or Chad Glasgow Out as DC of Texas Tech. A headline on the opposite side of the continuum in this matter would read Texas Tech First Denies Firing, but Confidential Settlement Agreement Forces Out DC Chad Glasgow.

Turn the page on Glasgow

Let's just turn the page on Glasgow. It's a pressure cooker over at TTU football right now and some 'fans' aren't helping make it any better. I suspect it got a little too hot in the kitchen for Glasgow .

Tuberville is going to coach the next season. If he puts up some big wins, the conversation will change dramatically. When you win in college football, you can do no wrong (unless your Ohio State). When you lose, you can do nothing right.

I like how all the people

I like how all the people against the football team think that fans on here that have a different opinion about Leach have been paid off by Hance. Well it's pretty pathetic to think that most would assume that when someone else has a different opinion. I could be a conspirator like most on this blog, but I intend on spending my free time not reading the double t cross and most of the wiping paper that most of you are advertising.

If you want to read some unbiased facts about Leach here is a good article from someone outside of West Texas. http://www.collegefootballvoice.com/2011/11/14/mike-leach-the-overrated-pirate/

As I said....

before, the season is over and the program is still in disarray. Losing a prize recruit the way they did and one that would quite possibly be a difference maker on one of the worst defenses in Div I is inexcusable and makes the school look like complete fools.....but I guess when you have a bunch of fools in charge, then that's what you get. If this happened anywhere else, someone's head would be on the chopping block. This goes beyond dumba-- Tubberville. The bast---ds he reports to need to be hung by their b-lls right on Tech campus. If they charge admission, maybe they can make up for the lost ticket sales they'll certainly have come the 2012 Football season.

@redraiderforlife

What is the difference between saying I am a lecher because you disagree with my opinion and my calling you a hancer because you disagree with my opinion. Anybody can write a book or an article and call it true. I have not read any of the pro Leach books and I do not intend to read any of the anti Leach material either. My opinions are based upon the events that have occurred, not somebody's opinions.

The bottom line is that Tech is in terrible shape and the root cause is the administration of Hance and his cronies. He stuck us with Gonzales for two years at a ridiculous salary to do nothing and he has ruined the football program at Tech because of his ego. The sooner Tech is rid of Hance the better.

"Big Money" equals Big Problems

Think back to January 24th when Chad came on board. I guessed at the time that he wasn't a Tuberville choice. First, can you see the HC going to Gerald Myers and asking for $400,000 to pay a DC. I don't think so. Glasgow had to have been the pick of a "Big Money" booster who also attached a check along with the choice. Think about it.

Big money boosters have been doing tremendous damage to the program for several years now. We won't be successful until everyone realizes contributions shouldn't be coupled with hire/fire actions.

@bigD

You just don't get it do you? While you continue to waste time banging out logic on this forum, the black helicopters continue to circle. Only feaco, lodotx, facts and the rest of theses brilliant posters are smart enough to stay hunkered down while calculatingly taking pot shots at the man on the grassy knoll. If I were you, I would lay low. The Men in Black will be coming for you soon.

@catlow

I have tried to find articles about Glasgow's hiring and contract and have not had a lot of success. Did he have a multi year contract?

It is interesting, if you go to Texas Tribune you can find that his $400K salary last year was more than Guy Bailey's. I assume they thought he might do more than Guy Bailey. Wait, maybe he did.

TT needs a familiar face 2 fill vacancy

Yes the 3-4 & the 4-2-5 experiments didn't werk so I think TT is goin 2 get someone he knows can get tha job done. I think the defensive talent level is up higher than when Leach was HC. I agree that TT needs to get back to a bowl game in 2012 & I think TT will. The defense will be better cause they are experienced players now. I'm predicting 8 to 10 wins

Big D, Catlow, Nashville Raider, Red Raider for Life

I find it absolutely hilarious that you guys are still trying to make EXCUSES for Tuberville and still trying to take shots at Mike Leach and rewrite the history of his coaching tenure at Tech. And NO guys, saying something negative about our DEBACLE of a head coach is not being "anti-Tech" ... it RECOGNIZING A PROBLEM AND DEMANDING A SOLUTION. Wanting what is best for Texas Tech isn't being "anti-Tech".

Anyone that believes and/or tries to spin this story into "this isn't really Tuberville's fault ... it's Leach's fault" or "Tuberville wasn't the guy that hired Glasgow ... a booster did" ... is an absolute moron. The HEAD COACH (especially someone with Tuberville's track record and experience) is 100% responsible for choosing his Offensive and Defensive Coordinators. You might could argue that the coordinator's have some say in choosing their position coaches ... but Tuberville picked Glasgow. Mike Leach had nothing to do with Tuberville hiring Glasgow. Also ... the fact that Tommy Tuberville has made no public comment on this situation is DESPICABLE. You hired the guy ... you fired the guy ... NOW OWN UP TO IT. The Tuberville led Tech football SPIRAL DOWN THE DRAIN continues.

So I guess this now means that retread John Lovett is now the new DC at Tech. John Lovett has been in such high demand that he has coached for 7 different teams in 10 seasons. WOW. His last stop was in the United Football League. WOW. Tuberville FIRED John Lovett as his DC at Auburn after the 2003 season. WOW. THIS IS THE GUY WHO'S GONNA TURN AROUND TECH'S DEFENSE. WOW. Tuberville just keeps the surprises coming.

Confirmation

Before Christmas when I pointed out that Tuberville had been untruthful in his response about whether or not he was firing two coaches, one of the usual Hance supporters on this forum criticized me and spun out a special plea on how Tubby could be interpreted as not exactly lying. Now after all the denials on Glasgow, I hope they all will have the good sense to keep quiet and accept that the public has been intentionally misled, but I doubt it. I do have a request for BigD, RdRdr, Mr. For Life and the other regularly appearing Hance partisans. I state here that I am not employed by or receiving any compensation from Texas Tech, Kent Hance, ESPN, the James family, their affilates, their attorneys, their lobbyists, or their public relation consultants, and that I am not seeking or planning to seek any such employment or compensation. I'd challenge each of them to include the same statement in his next post if he can. You know, just to clear up where a person might be coming from.

JUCO Transfers

There is a reason why an athlete go to a junior college.. He is either not smart enough to pass the SAT or ACT, maybe he has had run ins with the law. The gradauation rate at Tech will definitely not be at the top of the conference or nation. I will not watch or listen to a TT football game until Tubby is gone.
