AMES, Iowa -- Texas Tech defensive tackle Michael Starts will miss Saturday's game against Iowa State and could wind up in position to seek a medical hardship waiver for this season, a Tech spokesman said Thursday.
Starts was not on the dress roster Tech posted Thursday for the Iowa State game. Associate athletic director Blayne Beal said Starts has "a medical issue," but declined to release more specific information.
Beal said it could lead to Starts pursuing a medical hardship waiver, meaning his freshman-year playing status would be restored for 2013. However, he stressed that determination has not been made and Starts could return to action soon.
The 6-foot-4, 303-pound Starts was one of the team's top-rated signees in February. Coaches held Starts out of the first two games, considering whether to redshirt him, but tossed him into the mix in week three against New Mexico. He debuted with three tackles, including a crushing sack on Lobos quarterback B.R. Holbrook.
