AMES, Iowa — Texas Tech’s Kole Weldon and Kyal Meyers each posted runner-up finishes and teammate Shujaa Benson had a third-place showing on the first day of the Big 12 Conference indoor track and field championships Friday.
Weldon, a junior from Jacksboro, took second in the weight throw with a school record and personal best mark of 65 feet, 51/2 inches.
Meyers, a senior from China Spring, tied for second in the pole vault, clearing a season-best 17-61/2.
Benson, a junior from Tanzania, got third in the long jump, going 24-21/2.
Their points helped Tech to third in the men’s standings after the first day.
In women’s preliminaries, the Lady Raiders’ Le’Tristan Pledger ran the fastest overall time in the 60-meter hurdles, 8.10 seconds, and Cierra White had the second-best time, 7.38, in the 60-meter dash.
Saturday is the final day of the meet at Iowa State’s Lied Recreation Center.
