CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Texas Tech first baseman Eric Gutierrez was ejected from Sunday’s game at Coral Gables after a collision during the third inning with Miami’s David Thompson.
Two coaches were also ejected after the teams got into a scuffle at the NCAA tournament regional.
With the bases loaded and two outs for Miami, Thompson grounded out before colliding with Gutierrez, according to A-J Media’s George Watson on Twitter. “Words are said, and (Tech coach Tim) Tadlock goes after the Miami first-base coach. Benches clear.”
Thompson tried to beat out an infield hit when he collided with Gutierrez, was tagged out and fell to the ground. Gutierrez showed Thompson the ball and then dropped it right next to him.
Miami first base coach Gino DiMare had words with Gutierrez, prompting Tech first base coach Jay-Bob Thomas to come from the dugout.
Both benches emptied, but no punches were thrown and the game was delayed 15 minutes. Gutierrez, Thomas and DiMare were ejected and had to leave the grounds. Thomas and Gutierrez went to sit on the team bus.
Gutierrez was not automatically suspended for Game 7 as it has ramifications on that game, Watson reported. It will be determined after Game 6 ends.
The game went into a rain delay with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Tech still leads Miami 1-0.
A win would put Texas Tech in the super regionals. A victory by Miami would set up a deciding game to see who advanced on Monday.
