Ensemble cast shines vocally, keeps audience smiling

Playwright Joe DiPietro’s “All Shook Up” is one of the more unoriginal jukebox musical comedies given a chance on Broadway. Yet it winds up surprisingly funny and entertaining when approached as a community theater production by no fewer than three directors at the Cactus Theater. Mind you, the play also has a social message which could have been handled with more courage and professionalism.

Varied venues greet art trail visitors

Those who missed this spring’s Lubbock Arts Festival have yet another opportunity to visit with football player and artist Baron Batch. He agreed to visit and discuss his art from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the Lubbock Arts Alliance’s office, 1717 Texas Ave., during the First Friday Art Trail. The art trail will continue until 9 p.m., but Batch has an appointment that dictates he leave early.

Bob Wills celebration offers music and fun The 42nd annual Bob Wills celebration will be held through Saturday, April 27, in Turkey. A dance will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight, Thursday, April 25, at the high school and will be $15. Performing will be Joe Settlemires, Bobby Koefer, Jimmy Young, Jason Roberts, Wayne Glassen, Curtis Hays, Lee Barlow, Lisa Fruit and Jimmy Burson. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26, Billy Mata and the Friends of the Texas Playboys Dance and Jake Hooker and the Outsiders will peform at the dance. Tickets are $15.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes set for 8 a.m. The Lubbock Rape Crisis Center is hosting the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event at 8 a.m. today, April 13, at the Lubbock County Courthouse, 904 Broadway. More than 150 men will walk a mile in high heels. That evening LRCC will host an afterparty at the Legacy Event Center, 1500 14th St. For more information, call 620-9059.

A 1955 musical comedy with music and lyrics composed by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross; and a book by George Abbott and Douglas Wallop, adapting Wallop’s novel “The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant.” Musical comedy staged as a dinner theater production at LHUCA’s Christine DeVitt Icehouse Theater, 511 Ave. J. Meal served at 6:30 p.m. and musical performed at 7:30 p.m. Directed by James Bush. Tickets for dinner-and-show are $68.75, $58.50 and $48.25 (includes varied service charges). Art more than just pictures hanging on a wall

Friday, April 12, marked a pair of arts anniversaries — the 35th anniversary of the Lubbock Arts Festival and Elizabeth Regner’s 10th year in the position of executive director of the Lubbock Arts Alliance, the organization responsible for keeping this festival alive and growing. That is no small feat when one considers that one of Regner’s earlier ideas was to dump 35 tons of sand onto the floor of the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center exhibit hall, and bring in a group called Team Sandtastic to sculpt a picnic scene during the course of the festival.

Play speaks to something all of us face

C. Kevin Helmer was introduced to writer Horton Foote’s “The Trip to Bountiful” for the first time when a college film class required him to watch the 1985 version starring Geraldine Page. As much as he loves the movie, and especially Page’s performance, he had to wait for an opportunity to direct the story on stage. Blessed by perfect timing, “The Trip to Bountiful” is being staged the next two weekends at Lubbock Community Theatre, 4230 Boston Ave.
