LSO now selling tickets for September Yo-Yo Ma concert Iconic international cellist and recording artist Yo-Yo Ma will perform in concert with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Theatre, 1501 Mac Davis Lane. Ma will play the Elgar Cello Concerto. David Cho will make his debut as LSO conductor. Reserved seats are $250 (includes invitation to pre-show gala dinner), $175, $100 and $50. Tracy Hutson wanders through a graveyard of ovens that haven’t roasted a turkey or baked a ham since decades before she was born. Picking through their discarded parts, she muses: “The rust on this is just so gorgeous.” Her “Picker Sisters” partner, Tanya McQueen, agrees — yet another item to bargain for, purchase and turn into a high-end piece of furniture on their Lifetime network TV series. You’ll find a similar pair of women, the “Junk Gypsies,” doing much the same thing over at HGTV. And these two pairs are not alone.

The 95th monthly Friday Art Trail includes a fascinating reunion taking place at Legacy, 1500 14th St. A pair of Texas Tech graduates, Linda Adkins and Anita Smith, will exhibit their art together for the first time since 1966, the year of their college graduation. Almost 47 years ago, the same two women, then known as Linda McCauley and Anita (Pace) Condit, both were showing recent paintings at the Young Women’s Christian Association, 1641 Broadway. McCauley was a Monterey High School graduate, and Condit had attended Lubbock High School before studying at Tech.

The support organization called Foster A Life plans to stage its annual Hub City Beach Party on Saturday with a carefully crafted beach area, music by the Landsharks Band from Florida, and a volcano fashioned for the fundraiser. Tickets to this year’s event, which will be open from 5 p.m. to midnight at the Cactus Courtyard, 1801 Buddy Holly Ave., are $15 in advance and $20 at the gate. They are available at Select-A-Seat locations and at the Foster A Life office, 2402 52nd St., where group rates are available.

Los Hermanos and Lubbock’s Fishing Future is hosting a free fishing event from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Buddy Holly Lake, North University Avenue and Cesar E. Chavez Drive. The event is for children and families, and all kids up to 17 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is free, includes lunch, a chance to win prizes and gift bags. Cooper house concert rescheduled on Aug. 14 at Johnson house Paul Johnson never gave up after having to cancel a July 1 house concert by Cary Cooper; it turned out that show was booked too close to Independence Day activities. So Cooper now will headline a house concert at 7:15 p.m. Aug. 14 at Johnson’s home at 3707 94th St. Cooper plays folk and Americana music. The minimum donation for general admission seating is $20, with all funds going to the performer. Donations also are requested, and the event has a BYOB policy.

The 30th annual Cattle Baron’s Ball this Saturday is more than just a dinner and concert, it’s a celebration to benefit research for a cure for cancer. The benefit for the American Cancer Society will feature a live auction, lots of food and a performance by country duo Steel Magnolia. Steel Magnolia was formed after Joshua Scott Jones and Meghan Linsey won the second season of the television show “Can You Duet?” and signed their first recording contract in 2009. Past performers have been Pat Green, Cooder Graw and the Dixie Chicks.

SEATTLE — Gyasi Ross grew up decades after the “Lone Ranger” aired on TV, but his friends would still call him “Tonto” when they teased him. “Everybody understands who Tonto is, even if we hadn’t seen the show, and we understood it wasn’t a good thing,” said Ross, a member of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana who lives and has family in the Suquamish Tribe, outside Seattle. “Why else would you tease someone with that?”
