Texas Tech football coach Tommy Tuberville said Tuesday that defensive end Leon Mackey’s injury could keep him out for the season.
The junior transfer suffered a deflated lung after being hit in the chest during Saturday’s game against Texas State.
Tuberville said Monday that Mackey would likely miss several weeks. On Tuesday he said “it could be for the season.”
“Whatever he does, if it’s four, five or six weeks he’s out, it’s going to take him two or three weeks to get back in shape,” Tuberville said. “We’re going on. We’ve got to get younger guys playing, might bring someone else up.”
Mackey, a 6-foot-5, 255-pound blue-chip from Hinds (Miss.) Community College, was a potential impact player for Tech at defensive end.
Redshirt freshman Jackson Richards and sophomore Aundrey Barr are most likely to fill in for Mackey.
