How does Tommy Tuberville feel about his team's No. 1 total defense ranking?

After the weekend’s games shook out, idle Texas Tech moved up a spot to No. 1 in the nation in total defense — a far cry from No. 114, where the Red Raiders finished last year. Tech’s yield is 160.3 yards per game, but against Northwestern State, Texas State and New Mexico.

“We have talked to our players about that,” Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said. “It’s good to look and say, ‘Hey, we have improved and we are getting better,’ and we have. But to that extent — being No. 1 — I don’t know whether we are at that point or not, or even close. But we are not where we were last year at this time either. We’re probably somewhere in the middle.”

There’s no doubt Tuberville has seen some things he likes, though, especially single-game rushing allowances of 13, 129 and 84 yards.

“I’m proud of where we’re at in terms of stopping the run,” he said.

Tuberville acknowledged that none of the non-conference opponents tested Tech’s pass defense much. After the last two years, though, Tech's not going to quibble with showing signs of progress.

“It’s good to have some success,” Tuberville said. “I think our guys are building confidence.”

After Oklahoma And WV

It won't matter so it's not even worth talking about.

It's easy

It's easy for the stats to go there when all you have played are high school teams. Now, we begin play.

hmmm...

Let me know where they are ranked after playing a real team.

You guys are not true red raider fans. If youre going to post on these boards, you have to believe in things that havent happened yet and all of you forgot to criticize mike leach. Youre not real red raider fans.

I am a fan of College

I am a fan of College football. I wish Texas tech would play tougher teams to become a more competative team during the conference play. Playing scrub teams will not improve the team, you cant win games with confidence alone.

You have to play the

You have to play the schedule. I'm sure we will not remain number 1 in defense, but it sure beats last years defense at this point in the year. We'll check back after the two mentioned games Runnin...could be right...could be wrong. I can remember when T Jones scheduled those harder games for Spike and talking to some of the players about the games they played. The didn't have any confidence after getting beat down by the U of Miami in the 80's. Most all of the teams schedule light for OOC to knock the rust off before Conference play. The top conferences don't have light weeks anymore. Anybody can beat anybody on any given weekend like the OU game last year. A couple of years ago, if Colorado had two wins for the season, one was against us. People will jump on the board about being a mid pack team. We now play in a conference that has a different look. Being 3rd in the South would be a mid pack team in the new arrangement. I for one would like the Big 12 to actually have 12 teams. For what ever reason Texas seems to prefer a 10 team conference.

Grow up

I would like to play better teams also, but look at other schools and the lopsided wins. Most schools pad therir records. Also, this schedule is from the Leach era. His first 2 years at TTU he dropped (paid to get out of them) 2 teams (Fresno State & one of the Carolina teams) that could beat us to get easy wins. I enjoyed the Leach era, but it is over. TTU is number 1 in the nation in defense and you TTU haters keep bitching. Get a life or go somewhere else. Go Tech!!!!

not hating

Slimeballs!!!!!!

you slimeballs that try and say Raiders play an easy schedule look at most of the top 25 and youll see the very exact thing! The first or at least 2 of the 3 first games are warm-ups where you get your offense and defense in-tune and let alot of 2nd and 3rd teamers play in 2nd half. People been doing that for 30 years. And even Tommy Tubberville had Alabama within seconds of signing to play Raiders this year (and he did that 18 mos ago) in Jerry freakin World but Nick (big Daddy) Saban backed out as he realized what he could be doing and also that Tub had beaten his Alabamies like 6 out of 9 yrs straight! He then allowed lowly rebldg Michigan to play him. Not that was a laugher !!!

We got a ton of speed and a ton of new guys and we are comin at you right here and right now!

Beat the holy hell out of Iowa State, TCU , and specially UT. Go Raiders! Wreck 'em Tech.

Fewer critics

Wow, interesting how most of the mainstay Tech haters are strangely absent. Guess they're running out of things to criticize. I'm sure they're waiting for the first loss. Unfortunately for them.....more talent, more depth, more experience, better coaching, less injuries = better team. This is true regardless of the schedule thus far.

@mojo

I do not know any Tech haters. I do know many people who think Hance has ruined Tech and that Tuberville is a lousy coach. However, until the team screws up, there is no reason to comment.

TTU fans

im sure real fans arent sittin around waiting on a loss to start criticizing the team but they are wishing them the best by rooting for them whether they are good or bad.

TTU better

I agree with those of you saying everybody does it. They are like pre-season football games. You get some actual game play in and you get to look at your back ups. It is what it is, if everyone else was not doing it and we were one of the few then that would be different. Until they outlaw these types of games everyone is going to do that, or maybe it will change in 2014 when we have the top four playing and they will factor in strength of schedule for the rankings. If that occurs than you won't see games like these or maybe just one per season. You will also see 2 loss teams in the top 4. Either way it is what it is and compared to how we played last year and this year there is improvement. Are we the #1 defense? On paper, yes, but I know we are better than last year. I know because of the types of offenses we have in the league we won't stay there but I think we can stay in the top 25 in defense. If that happens we will have a great year! Time will tell and the Iowa St game is the first step. Go Tech!!

Tech haters?

I think he must be thinking of the contingent of UT (tshirt) fans that once visited these threads. There are complainers after the 5-7 season because they felt it was basically unnecessary. But really no reason to rehash that at this point. I think pretty much everyone that posts here simply want the Red Raiders to win, no matter who is coach or chancellor. This week I'll go 38-28, Tech. Wreck Em.

When was the last time

I am aware that we haven't played anyone, but when was the last time we did. How many of those times where we the number one offense in the country and very few people doubted this fact.

Remember 2008, Graham Harrell had problems with both Nevada and Eastern Washington, but no one questioned the offense, but our defense wasn't even top twenty after playing these "High School" teams.

I for one know it has been a long time since three weeks into a season we were the number one defense in our conference much less the nation. Will be number one after WV, OU, OSU, or Baylor? I sure hope so, but also being of sound mind I doubt it.

For this week, our defense is the number one team and I hope next week we are still having this argument.

Profound

Thats a remarkable deduction, bill. You referred to us as complainers. Guilty as charged. Sorry, man. You see bill, I actually went to Tech, got a degree and everything. You see when you enroll at a university, you file a degree plan and, well you can google it. Being a degree recipient from Texas Tech, I am a member of a family, if you will. I love Tech and I hate to see anything detrimental happen there, so I voice (in this case, post) my displeasure. I dont know feaco or facts or gunz so I cant speak for them, but I never saw them post anything but displeasure at the 2011 season and the chain of events leading there, and the hope that things will improve. Look up "haters" in the dictionary, bill. I even spelled it for you. I would be interested in watching you twist anything I have posted into hate. If you have trouble understanding the definition (meaning of the word), let me know. Im here to help.

@bill214

I was waiting for the Spaeth meeting to get out. I was surprised that it took you so long to make your disparaging remarks. Considering Hance as a detriment to Tech overall and Tuberville as a lousy coach does not make me a hater of Tech. If anything I would love to see them both gone and Tech improve by beating tough opponents. Keep up that fine work Bill, I know that Spaeth and Kent are happy with your job.

Easy teams

It seems that the easy teams sometimes aren't so easy. Ask Baylor and Arkansas about that "easy" team called UL Monroe. Ask Kansas State about that easy team "North Texas" Yea I know that UNT played K State close and didn't beat them. Yea I know that Baylor did beat UL Monroe. But not but by a few points. Texas State did whip Houston. UL Monroe did beat Arkansas. Zero U thought K state would be an easy team. They think everyone is an easy team though. Maybe not so much now. Maybe one of these days the easy teams will be the tough teams and the tough teams will be the easy teams.

Try again. Get right back on that horse. By the way, what grade am I in? What grade are you in? You and your half wit little buddy?
