With Tony Morales out, what Tech's real-time backup is likely to be at center and guard

Luckless Tech lineman Tony Morales is out again — this time for an indefinite period with a knee injury — Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury confirmed Monday.

Morales, a junior from Arlington Houston, has suffered season-ending injuries — one to each shoulder and also to a knee — each of the last three years. He’s never played in a game.

Tech lists true freshman Robert Castaneda as the backup center, though line coach Lee Hays said last week that Baylen Brown is the No. 2 at that spot. Brown is the starting right guard, but if something happened to center Jared Kaster, the Red Raiders could slide Brown to center and insert at guard a more experienced player such as senior James Polk.

Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said he’d like to redshirt at least one of Castaneda and freshman tackle Justin Murphy, but circumstances might dictate otherwise at some point.
