LIVE BLOG: Texas Tech Baseball Red-Black Game 1

Welcome to Game 1 of the 2012 Red-Black series at Rip Griffin Park. There are A LOT of new faces this year, not the least of which is new head coach Tim Tadlock and his staff.

We'll keep you updated with notes by innig as the game goes. The Red will be the visiting team while the Black is the home.

Senior right-hander Trey Masek starts on the mound for the black while newcomer Corey Taylor, a sophomore right-hander from Kennedale who pitched last season at Cisco JC is on the hill for the Red.

TOP 1
Masek on the hill. New radar gun readout on the scoreboard shows he's 90-92 with his fastball. Leadoff hitter Brett Bell (So.-TR, Robstown/Howard JC) pokes a leadoff opp. field single to left-center. New CF prospect Devon Conley, who Tech signed last year but redshirted after initially signing to go pro, makes a great sliding catch in center on a Bryant Burleson looper to start an F8-3 DP, then Masek strikes out Jake Barrios (Jr.-TR, Seward CC) to end the inning. Masek throws 11 pitches.

BOTTOM 1
Taylor is a big guy, 6-3, 235 and fills out the uniform. About 88-89 on FB, 73-75 on change. Not good so far as Conley bloops a leadoff single and Tim Proudfoot singles inside the bag at third to put runners at second and third. Mason Randolph first-pitch swinging bounces back to the mound for the first out. First baseman Eric Gutierrez (Fr.-HS, Mission Sharyland) loops a two-run single to center and goes to second on the throw, then DH Tyler Neslony (Fr.-HS Corpus Christi Calallen) doubles to right to make it 3-0. Brennan Moore pops up to second for the second out. Taylor comes back to end the inning with a K of J.J. Bissell (Fr.-HS Fort Collins, Colo. Fossil Ridge). BLACK 3, RED 0.

TOP 2
Masek 82 mph on first-pitch change to Blake Bass (So.-1L, Coronado). Second pitch is lined into center for base hit. Bass appears to have shed some of his baby fat and looks good. C Jarrard Poteete (Fr.-HS, Braggs, Okla.) out in front of a Masek change for the strikeout. IF A.J. Florence (Jr.-TR Grayson CC) fans on a 93 mph FB from Masek for second out. DH Wade Stramp (So.-TR, North Central JC) watches strike three as Masek gets out of the inning. Four strikeouts now for Masek, doing good job keeping the ball down. BLACK 3, RED 0

BOTTOM 2
Great play in the hole by Barrios on a bouncer off the bat of Alec Humphreys (Fr.-HS Desoto). Yes, if that name sounds familiar he is the son of former Tech all-American Mike Humphreys. OF Zach Davis (Fr.-HS Houston Cypress Lakes) grounds out weakly to second, and Florence makes great barehanded grab and throw on a high chopper to throw out the speedy Conley at first to end the inning. Much better frame for Taylor (11 pitches). BLACK 3, RED 0

TOP 3
Masek opens with a strikeout (looking) of OF Conner Smith (Fr.-HS Mansfield Legacy) on a pitch at the knees. OF Todd Ritchie (Jr.-TR Georgetown/Howard JC) works a 3-2 count but bounces back to Masek, breaking a string of 5 straight strikeouts. Masek comes back with his sixth strikeout (Bell) on his 48th pitch to end the inning. BLACK 3, RED 0

BOTTOM 3
Proudfoot way out in front of a Taylor breaking ball grounds weakly to third. Randolph sends Ritchie to the warning track in left on a deep fly, again swinging at the first pitch. Gutierrez reaches when Barrios misplays a looper that hits the ground right at his glove and squirts away. PITCHING CHANGE: LHP Andre Wheeler in for Taylor with 2 outs in the 3rd. ... Wheeler's first pitch is a 70 mph change. Second is an 84 mph fastball, both for strikes. Gutierrez easily steals second on Poteete. Wheeler gets Neslony to fan at strike three in the dirt.
Final Line on Taylor: 2.2 IP, 4 hits, 3 runs, 3 earned runs, 0 walks, 1 strikeout.
BLACK 3, RED 0

TOP 4
Burleson first-pitch swinging blooper to right-center, just like his game-winner vs. UT. Masek goes 3-0 to Barrios, who at 3-1 singles up the middle. LHP Reid Meyer (Fr.-HS, FW Country Day) and RHP Jerad McCrummen (Sr.-2L) up in the pen for the Black. Bass pops up to Humphreys at second. PITCHING CHANGE: LHP Reid Meyer on with 1 out, 2 on. Masek leaves after 58 pitches. ... Meyer is big (6-2, 190) lefty with overhand motion, 70 mph breaker, 81-83 FB. Gives up first walk of the game to Poteete to load the bases for Florence. PITCHING CHANGE: RHP Jerad McCrummen on with 1 out, bases loaded. ... McCrummen 89-91 FB, 77 mph change. Florence pops up and Gutierrez makes an outstanding catch right against the brick wall down the first-base line, then a diving stab by Humphreys on a ball up the middle robs Stramp of a hit, and Humphreys flips to Proudfoot at the bag to get Poteete and end the threat. Nice job by Humphreys. BLACK 3, RED 0.
Final line on Masek: 3.1 IP, 4 hits, 0 runs, 6 strikeouts

BOTTOM 4
Wheeler opens the fourth with a strikeout of Moore, who was out in front of an 81mph breaker. Burleson throws out Bissell on a slwo roller to third. Humphreys draws a four-pitch walk, then takes second on the next pitch from Wheeler (after a mound visit from Tadlock). Wheeler rallies to strike out Davis on a 72-mph breaker down and in. Good job coming back after the walk.

TOP 5
RHP Johnathan Tripp (Fr.-HS Spring, Klein) warming in the pen. Smith leads off with an opposite-field double off the wall in left. Ritchie lays a beautiful bunt down the third-base line to put runners at the corners. (We'll see if that continues in the spring, usually doesn't). Ritchie takes second with no throw to put runners at second and third. Bell with a soft liner to Proudfoot for the first out. Burleson pops up to first right in front of the bag. Barrios draws the walk to load the bases for Bass, who is out on a check-swing grounder to first to end the inning. BLACK 3, RED 0

BOTTOM 5
Wheeler with a leadoff walk to Conley. Comes back to strike out Proudfoot. Poteete with a great throw from his knees cuts down Conley stealing second (may have gotten him on the foot on swipe tag going by by Florence). Randloph walks on a full count. Gutierrez lines a single just over Burleson's head into left, taking second on the throw as Randloph goes to third. Gutierrez has been on base all three times tonight (2 hits, E6). Neslony grounds up the middle and Barrios makes a nice running play to cut the ball off and throw to first to end the inning. BLACK 3, RED 0. PITCHING CHANGE: Johnathon Tripp now in to start the 6th for the Black.
Final line on McCrummen: 1/1 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 0 strikeouts.

TOP 6
Tripp 87-88 FB, 74-77 mph breaker. Poteete draws second straight 7-pitch walk to start the inning. Florence misses a bunt, and Poteete is too far off the bag, and is cut down 2-3-6 at second. Florence then watches a breaking ball on an 0-2 count for strike three. Tripp then goes 2-0 to Stramp, who lifts an opposite-field single to left. RHP Heath Herrington (Jr.-TR Amarillo, Cisco JC) warming in the Red bullpen. Stramp is caught stealing second on a great throw by Randloph to end the inning. BLACK 3, RED 0.

BOTTOM 6
Herrington on for the Red.
Final line on Wheeler: 2.1 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts.
Herrington: 74-78 mph breaker; 85 mph FB
Moore strikes out on a 78 mph breaking ball. Bissell grounds to second. Humphreys draws a 4-pitch walk and takes second on a breaking ball in the dirt. Davis strikes out on FB to end the inning. BLACK 3, RED 0

TOP 7
Tripp starts with a strikeout of Smith (looking). Ritchie pops up to Proudfoot behind the bag at second. Bell lines a single just in front of a diving Davis down the left-field line. Bell steals second as Randolph air-mails one into right-center, but Brennan Moore guns Bell down at third to end the inning. BLACK 3, RED 0

BOTTOM 7
Conley opens with a single off Herrington (does not appear to have hurt him at all) followed by a wild pitch moving Conley to second. Proudfoot follows with a walk. Randloph fouls out near the wall to Burleson at third. Gutierrez is hit by a pitch to load the bases. Herrington then gets lucky as Neslony hits a check-swing line drive right to Burleson, who steps on the bag for the double play to end the inning. BLACK 3, RED 0
Pitching Change: RHP Justin Bethard (Fr.-HS Frisco Centennial) now on for the Black.

TOP 8
Final line on Tripp: 2 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts.
Nice play by Nathan Bauder (Fr.-HS, Albuquerque La Cueva) on a short hop grounder to third by Burleson. Bauder then throws wide after scooping a grounder to his left, allowing Barrios to reach on the E6. Randolph guns down Barrios with a nice pick on the throw by Proudfoot. Another wide throw by Bauder on a grounder down the allows Bass to reach. Looks like he's hurrying his motion instead of being solid with his foundation. Bethard comes back to get Poteete on a grounder to second to end the inning. BLACK 3, RED 0
Pitching change: RHP Dominic Moreno (So.-TR, Farmington, N.M./Howard College) now on for the Red.
Final line on Herrington: 2 IP, 1 hit, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts, 1 HBP.

BOTTOM 8
Moreno is 87-88 FB, 77-78 breaker. FB looks faster with his quick motion.
Moore watches strike three for the first out. PH Nick Gibert (Jr.-TR Ridgeland, Miss./Cisco JC) also watches strike three for second out. Humphreys draws a 9-pitch walk. Moreno works fast, and looks like he can get out of sync a bit and allow a walk like that. Then he come back with a 77 mph breaker to buckle Davis for the strikeout, fanning the side. BLACK 3, RED 0
Pitching change: RHP Matt Withrow (Fr.-HS, Midland Christian) out to close the game for the Black. Withrow was drafted in the late rounds in June.
Final line on Bethard: 1 IP, all zeros.

TOP 9
Withrow 91-94 FB; 83-86 breaker
Florence grounds to short for out one. Stramp fans on a 94 mph fastball. Smith strikes out on a check swing. FINAL: BLACK 3, RED 0

WP -- Trey Masek
LP -- Corey Taylor
SV -- Matt Withrow

Eric Gutierrez: 2-3, 2 RBIs, HBP
