Texas Tech announced plans on Thursday for a football Ring of Honor, which will be unveiled during the team's home opener against Northwestern State on Sept. 1.
The purpose of the ring of honor is to pay tribute to "an elite group of players and coaches that made outstanding contributions to Red Raider Football," according to a Tech release.
Inductees will have their names etched on the west side of Jones AT&T Stadium, facing the playing surface.
“The careers of those that we will celebrate in this Ring of Honor brought national recognition to this university and left an incredible mark on our football program," Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in a statement.
Tech will announce the first class of inductees on July 5.
“I am a firm believer in celebrating and remembering those who helped shape our program,” Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said in a statement. “The men that will be inducted into this prestigious group left a mark on Texas Tech University that will forever guide this football program.”
Tech said in its statement that candidates for the ring of honor will be screened by an anonymous selection committee.

Spike Dykes and Mike Leach. Please don't, anonymous, use this effort to divide. These two men of honor and respect should be in the first announcement as so much what they accomplished represents Texas Tech's South Plains ("Don Williams") and Innovative ("Buddy Holly") personality. 20+ years of steady improvement.
Let those two coaches join the many great players from the long Raider history, Donnie Anderson to Gabe Rivera, Zach Thomas to Michael Crabtree.
Leach and Dykes in first group would go a long way though toward healing a lot of wounds. Inviting Leach back to a ceremony would alone help Red Raiders as we undoubtedly have entered a rapid decline where the past will have to be enough until integrity and competence are restored. Just don't let Mrs. TT pick Leach up at the airport.
@lodotex
Of course, do not forget the great E. J. Holub. I agree with what you said and I hope hance is not one of the people that make that decision or the whole thing will be political.
@feaco
Have you ever made a comment that wasn't a slam against Tech or Hance or anything for that matter? You must really be a miserable person. Never has this University seen more growth than under the Hance administration. And @ LodoTx...inviting Leach back is a very stupid idea. Finally integrity is back now that Leach is gone. And to write something in such poor taste as your statement regarding Mrs. TT certainly shows the kind of character you have.
Ring Of Honor
Please don't disgrace it right off the bat and put myers and hance on it
@wscott
I do not slam Tech. In fact, I want Tech to succeed and get better by getting rid of the political appointees that have ruined Tech. I guess you do not like Holub either.

By integrity, you mean lying, several times about why someone was fired? And losing? What world do you live in? Or perhaps you were being facetious. If that's the case, then you're post was mildly humorous.
The Truth Is.......
Since every moment of every day out there is politics, it's hard to figure who will be among the first in.
If it was based on skill and impact on the program (Which will never happen), it might be Tarbox, Cavazos, and Holub. Next group Parks, Anderson, and Dykes. Next in no order might be Bam, Irons, Gabe, Thomas.
Truth is, Crabby and Donny and EJ, as 2-time AA's should be in 1st group.
Best pro was Welker--but that's not college. (WR reverse never as good the day he left.)
If the place blows up and everybody is killed and you restart from scratch you'll see Leach.
My prediction is they'll create an endowment for the Honor and from there it'll be the same old you know what.
