Bethel's HS coach 'shocked' at incident (Talbot Blog)

Nigel Bethel II was dismissed from the Texas Tech football team Sunday and faces felony assault charges after he was accused of hitting Lady Raider Amber Battle in the face during a pickup basketball game on the school’s campus.

His former high school coach was surprised when he heard the news.

Booker T. Washington (Miami, Florida) coach Tim Harris Jr. told the Miami Herald the news was “mind-blowing and shocking to all of us [at the school].”

“It definitely caught us off guard,” Harris told the Herald. “He’s a kid that’s been in our program for four years, and we’ve never had this kind of situation with him before.”

Texas Tech is allowing Bethel to finish his summer term at the school, which ends July 3, before he returns home to Miami.

Harris said other schools have already reached out for Bethel’s services, but he could not say which. Harris said Bethel will “hopefully” be enrolled at another school “by the end of summer.”

A Texas Tech Police Department offense report released Monday accuses Bethel – enrolled in his first month at the school after graduating from Booker T. in May – of “causing serious bodily injury” by hitting Amber Battles on Saturday. The one-page report states the attack included “hands, fists, feet, etc.”

Bethel was released from custody pending formal charges by the Lubbock County district attorney’s office.

It is a real shame

we can't get the complete news here in Hooterville.

There has to be more to the story than she "may have pushed him first until he 'got up' and punched her in the nose with a closed fist".

Not condoning the actions of either party.

There are reports that he kicked her, beat her with his fists. If this is true, he shouldn't be allowed a scholarship to ANY school.

Was this a rush to judgment (re: Leach) to appease the local fan base or is he being bum-rushed right out of town?

You will be hard-pressed to get close to the truth of this story, with this non-newspaper anyway.

Stay tuned, Bethel will be playing at another college in the fall. Most likely one that considers him innocent until proven otherwise by a jury of his peers. But that information will probably come from Mt. Pilot.
