Odessa American: Marquez says Tech football helped him this summer (Raider Buzz blog)

Bradley Marquez started playing a new position when he arrived at extended spring training with the New York Mets, and his other athletic career has helped him pick it up rather quickly.

The 19-year-old Marquez, who played shortstop during his last three baseball seasons at Odessa High School, is now a center fielder for the Kingsport (Tenn.) Mets of the rookie Appalachian League. He said patrolling the outfield isn’t much different than catching passes in football, which he did last fall as a true freshman at Texas Tech.

“It was probably the easiest adjustment I could possibly have, coming from playing receiver with Tech to coming here,” Marquez said Thursday from Tennessee, where Kingsport was playing Elizabethton. “You’re basically running routes in the outfield, finding the quickest way to the ball and reading it off the bat.
