AUSTIN - It is not exactly a sleepy race, but so far the Republican contest in Texas House District 84 has been quiet compared to the dogfight in neighboring District 83.
But if John Frullo, Mark Griffin and Ysidro Gutierrez can help it, that could change today when the three candidates vying for the open House seat participate in an hourlong televised debate hosted by the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce.

AUSTIN - Friends and relatives of Zach Brady - who is challenging state Rep. Delwin Jones in the March 2 Republican primary - are probably not surprised that the Lubbock attorney raised $115,000 last year to run in House District 83.
A campaign finance contribution report the Texas Ethics Commission requires of each candidate for public office shows that Brady raised nearly twice as much as Jones, who raised $66,600 during the second half of 2009, and four times as much as accountant Charles Perry, also of Lubbock, who is also challenging Jones. Perry raised $28,265 and loaned $49,365 to his campaign.

AUSTIN - The Texas House is Republican-led and about as conservative as any political body in the country. But for some in the state's GOP, it's not nearly conservative enough.
A wave of anti-establishment fervor - first harnessed last year with the grassroots conservative "Tea Party" movement - has led to a surge of challenges to Republican state House incumbents in the March 2 primary elections. Challengers say the GOP veterans are too moderate and have repeatedly failed to meet conservative benchmarks.

AUSTIN - While the three Republican candidates in Texas House District 83 raised more than $200,000 in the second half of 2009, in neighboring District 84 the money race has just begun. The three Republican candidates for the open seat started the year with little or no money.
As of Dec. 31, former Lubbock County Commissioner Ysidro Gutierrez raised $2,504, according to the required campaign finance report he filed with the Texas Ethics Commission. As of Monday afternoon, the commission had not posted the filing of Mark Griffin, former Texas Tech Board of Regents member, but Griffin said he raised $3,350.

AUSTIN - State Rep. Delwin Jones, who has served in the Texas Legislature for 29 years, made it official Thursday - he is seeking another two-year term.
But as happened last year and in 2006, if the Lubbock Republican is to be re-elected, he will first have to fend off challengers from his own party.
