AUSTIN - He made some noise running for Texas governor, but singer and humorist Richard "Kinky" Friedman recognized he is not the people's choice for the post.
Instead, Friedman will run for state agriculture commissioner, also as a Democrat, his campaign manager Rania Batrice said Monday.

County Commissioner Patti Jones will face a Lubbock city councilman in the Republican Primary in March as she seeks re-election.
Councilman John Leonard, who represents the city's growing southwest corner, would have been up for re-election in May.

Two Lubbock County candidates raised almost 10 times the campaign dollars of their opponents heading into the spring Republican primary, according to finance documents filed Friday.
Both candidates said their campaigns were just getting started.

A Lubbock attorney continued to pull in thousands of dollars in campaign cash in January with early voting in the Republican primary drawing near.
David Nelson, who will challenge County Judge Tom Head in February and March, reported raising more than $22,000 in January.

AUSTIN – Once again Lubbock attorney Zach Brady leads the money race in House District 83.
Brady, who is trying to unseat 29-year incumbent Delwin Jones, also of Lubbock, in the March 2 Republican primary, raised $42,118 during the first three weeks of January, 10 times the amount Jones raised during the same period, according to campaign finance reports the Texas Ethics Commission posted Tuesday morning.

County commissioners were receptive to a proposal from the City of Lubbock to treat a new water treatment facility in a relatively unitary fashion, rather than piecemeal.
The resolution, not yet approved but discussed at a Monday commissioners’ court meeting, would clean up legal language on land southeast of Lubbock the city will use as part of its water treatment program.

Lubbock County Judge Tom Head will seek one more term from voters to tackle lingering local issues and fend off state and federal problems on the horizon.
He asked voters to keep him and the experience he brings to the office as the county works to open a new jail and deal with threats to regional influence in Austin through political redistricting. He also wants to work to fend off new federal policies.
