Communication skills workshop planned A communication skills workshop will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 24, at the VCL Conference Room, 1706 23rd St. The fee is $65 per person or $50 for VCL agency partners. The workshop will cover aspects of communication such as developing attention-grabbing messages, selecting and organizing information, analyzing audiences and targeting materials. Participants can pay online at volunteerlubbock.org/pdf/communicationskills_web.pdf., or can mail or fax in the form to the Volunteer Center of Lubbock.

Margarete Sisk and Nell Richardson enjoyed learning to sing

In the early 20th century, evening singing schools taught students to read notes by shape, and with lanterns to illuminate the twilight under brush arbors, instilled memories for a lifetime. Margarete Sisk, now a resident of Grand Court in Lubbock, was living on a farm in Oklahoma in the 1930s, and recalls how her family often attended singing schools. “My Daddy wanted his kids to learn to sing. He arranged to have leaders come in, and usually they held the school in a church. That’s where I went.”

Meadow Memorial Day service May 27 The Meadow Cemetery Association will hold its annual Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m. May 27 at the Meadow Cemetery. From Meadow, travel 1/2 mile west, turn at curve in road (at intersection) north for 1/2 mile. The new Meadow Cemetery is on the east side of the road. Following the service is a catered lunch by Danny’s Fins and Hens at the Meadow Baptist Church. If the weather is bad, the entire program will be held at the church.

Guardianship meeting June 14

Guardianship meeting June 14 The Office of Dispute Resolution will present a full-day Guardianship Symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 14 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, 1501 Mac Davis Lane. The cost is $50 for individuals and $50 for a group (per person) until June 1. This symposium will provide county judges, county clerks, attorneys, guardians, social workers and service providers with practical information about guardianship in Texas.

few changes have been made in the so-called summer movie season since its birth with a Great White shark’s arrival in 1975. Even so, summer still is when movie fans expect to catch up with superheroes, science fiction, comedies, animated efforts, sequels by the handful (including comedy and animated sequels) and movies that find directors granted $150 million budgets to, if not just blow up buildings and monsters, at least deliver loud, flashy action. Summer movies were once confined to June through August. Not any more.

'Babes' became friends in elementary school

The Columbia Babes of Joplin are meeting this weekend in Lubbock to celebrate 68 years of friendship. They were first-graders in 1945 in the same neighborhood of Joplin, Mo., and were newly enrolled in Columbia Elementary School, but didn’t assume their arresting nickname until they remembered moving anxiously into the first year of junior high school. Lynn Atherton Bloxham, who now lives in San Antonio, recalls walking to school on the first day of first grade. “My mother was walking me to school, and she was nine months pregnant.”

Classic car, cycle show set Saturday

Classic car, cycle show set Saturday The Lamb County Cruzers will host a classic car and motorcycle show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the Lamb County AG Center, U.S. 385 and 17th Street in Littlefield. People with cars and motorcycles who want to enter can do so from 9 to 10 a.m. Pre-entry is $25 and day of is $30. This will be a professionally judged show on best paint, best interior and best engine. There will be door prizes, goodie bags, dash plaques and vendors. For more information, call 385-4565.

Youth of the South Plains celebrated for volunteer work 05/16/13 - 12:39am

20,702 youth contributed 208,797 hours in supporting the efforts of 361 agencies, and raised $235,171.

The youth of three dozen regional schools were honored for their service to the community during the Volunteer Center of Lubbock’s Celebration of Service Luncheon on Wednesday, May 15, at the Overton Hotel. With a program theme of “Let Your Light Shine,” master of ceremonies Byrnie Bass said, “We are surrounded by some of the finest lights in the Lubbock area. These young people have shown radiance, warmth and caring throughout the year.”
