Dear Miss Manners: I will be in a conversation with a friend, just the two of us, and she will pick up her tablet computer to search the Internet for some detail related to something one of us just said. Then she will notice a link to something else of interest, and she never again fully rejoins the conversation. She continues to look at the computer and browse, while also continuing to approximate conversation or sometimes just narrating what she is viewing.

On a general level, the recipe for achieving a lush yard during the summer seems straightforward enough: 1. Start with abundant daylight. Check! 2. Mix in warm weather. Done! 3. Just add water. ???? While the saying “Just add water” is meant to imply ease, our elevated water rates and restrictions have turned what was once an inexpensive task into something altogether different. Consequently, Lubbock has many more brown yards these days. In my case, I try to keep my yard alive enough so I can face my neighbors.
