My gosh! Some of the weather this January just about put out my pilot light. While I know that low temperatures are to be expected this time of year, the relentlessness of the cold is what caught me off guard. Where frigid days in West Texas are normally punctuated with mild ones, this particular snap was notable for its lack of relief. One upside to the cold wave was that it reminded me about the importance of saving energy while staying warm.

Learning Institute invites senior citizens to become students 01/23/13 - 12:50pm

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Texas Tech is offering learning experiences to older students. Emma Carrasco, director of Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, said the institute is inviting adults age 50-plus from Lubbock and surrounding communities to sign up. Classes, with varying deadlines, begin Thursday. Information is available by calling Carrasco at 742-6554.

Since the weather has been ridiculously cold, I thought it might make sense to post an article about saving energy while staying warm.

Although I now consider it a golden age, the 1970s were an astonishingly pessimistic time. The decade began with a country divided by war, crested with a president resigning in disgrace, and ended with a humiliating hostage situation. During all this, we were also subjected to a relentless drumbeat of warnings about resource depletion and ecological catastrophe.

Before the release of the album “Abbey Road” in 1969, the Beatles were on the verge of disintegrating due to friction between band members. Nevertheless, they got back into the studio and ironically produced one of the most critically acclaimed recordings in music history. A key element of the record is a series of vignettes strung together in a seamless manner. While the group never turned any of these individual pieces into an entire song, they were able to assemble these parts into an incomparable medley.
