The Avalanche-Journal is looking for freelance journalists and photographers to help us expand our coverage of news, business, features, community events and sports.

Senate candidates

The Lubbock Area Republican Women are featuring state Senate candidates Craig James, Tom Leppert and Lela Pittenger at 11:45 a.m. May 17 at the LakeRidge Country Club, 8802 Vicksburg Ave.

A meal is served, $15.

LARW supports the Republican party and the grassroots efforts. Anyone interested in joining is invited to attend the monthly meetings and become part of the political organization.

LHS to host summer pom camp June 4-8 at Lomax Center

Lubbock High School is hosting a summer pom camp from 7:30 a.m. to noon, June 4-8 at the Lomax Center, 24th Street and Avenue Q.

Groups will be divided into ages 8-10, 11-13 and 14-17. The cost is $25 per day or $125 for the week.

Registration and a non-refundable deposit of $25 needs to be made by May 23. The balance of $100 is due the first day of camp. If you are registering more than one child, the cost of the clinic is full price for the first child and half off the second. Registration cost includes snacks, a tote bag, a camp T-shirt and an ID badge.

Routines include kick series, leaps and turns, dance and pom techniques, jazz and lyrical routines.

Buddy Holly Center to present M.A.D. Summer Camps

The Buddy Holly Center presents the M.A.D. Summer Camp for children ages 8 to 12. The camp will be held June 18 through June 22 and June 25 through June 29 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

The cost is $50 and the camp will offer a music class to all students and then they will choose art or drama for their second workshop. At the end of camp, what they learned will be showcased throughout the week with a public music show, drama recital and art show.

Registration by June 11 and payment in full is required.

Sollis is raising money for leukemia, lymphoma society

Jessica Sollis is raising money through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program. She will run in the Nike Women’s Half Marathon on Oct. 14 in San Francisco, but has a deadline of July 1 to raise $3,000.
