"This gives me a closure," she said. "Like, when I'm working in my yard, I can turn around and I know Max is back in my head again. When I just turn around, he's there."

Belen Garcia and her husband, Max, had almost 47 years together. They meant their marriage to last for a lifetime, and early on, Max asked her for a promise. “We had been together for a year and six months, maybe eight. “I said, ‘Yes, sir, what is it?’ “That’s the way we spoke to each other — yes, sir; no sir; yes, m’am; no, m’am,” she remembers. “Promise me,” he had said. “What is it, before I say I will?”

Letter carriers schedule drive for South Plains Food Bank 05/01/13 - 12:21am

Lubbock’s letter carriers will pick up donations of non-perishable food on Saturday, May 11, during their regular mail deliveries. Contributors have been asked to place their bags of food next to their mailboxes so they can be picked up when mail is delivered. The 21st annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will benefit the South Plains Food Bank, according to David Weaver, chief executive officer.

Volunteer Center sets event workshop The Volunteer Center of Lubbock will host the “Event Planning” workshop from 9 to 11 a.m. today at the VCL Conference Room, 1706 23rd St. The workshop is $65 per person and $50 for VCL agency partners. Dog Agility Trials to take place this week

Dog Agility Trials to take place this week The South Plains Obedience Training Club of Lubbock will host three days of American Kennel Club All Breed Dog Agility Trials from noon to 3 p.m. May 3 and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 4 and May 5 at the Texas Tech Equestrian Center, one mile West of the intersection of 50th Street and Upland Avenue. Mom and artist transform nursery into miniature arts festival

Pearcy Sue has a Happy Room of her own. Though at 5 months she is sober as a proverbial judge while photographers and reporters look over the chambers where she could spend happy time for the next 18 years, she isn’t exactly disapproving either. And that’s a good thing, because her mom, Robin Hawkins of Lubbock, and artist Tara Humphreys, a high school English teacher at Sudan, spent hours upon hours of excruciating attention to detail in transforming the room into a kind of tastefully-done, miniature arts festival.
