Memorial Day 5K planned at Mackenzie

Memorial Day 5K planned at Mackenzie A Memorial Day 5K and one mile fun run will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, May 27, at Mackenzie Park, 601 Municipal Drive. The fun run is free but they are asking for a donations of non-perishable food items to donate to the South Plains Food Bank. The event is party of the larger summer of sharing food drive that will continue through June 24. UMC Physician Network Services to open clinic at 42nd Street and I-27 by east access road

A new UMC Physicians Network Services clinic is expected to open in November at 42nd Street and Interstate 27 by the east access road. UMC and PNS broke ground on the property Monday, May 20, for what will be the 35th clinic in the region. Clay Garrison, regional operation supervisor at UMC PNS said the clinic’s location was chosen to expand services to the east side of Lubbock.

From swimming lessons to 90-foot water slides, Lubbock’s city pools will offer a summer of water-soaked opportunities. Lubbock’s four municipal pools are set to open June 4, but families and organizations already can reserve pools for private parties and sign their children up for swimming lessons, said Whitney Wise, aquatics supervisor for Lubbock Parks and Recreation. Wise said city pools traditionally open the first Tuesday after Lubbock schools end for the spring semester, this year coming after Memorial Day.

Keeping a library in Southwest Lubbock and replacing the city’s $25,000-per-month leased Godeke Branch Library with a cheaper alternative top the Lubbock Libraries Board’s list of recommendations to city leaders. On Monday, May 20, the board voted unanimously on recommendations for Lubbock’s City Council, which assigned the board to provide the council with direction of how to move forward with the city’s southwest library branch.

The city of Lubbock Board of Health voted to approve a resolution for changes to the city’s Oil and Gas Drilling Ordinance. The motion passed with a 5-2 vote to submit the resolution to the City Council. Anne Epstein gave a presentation about the changes at the April Board of Health meeting. The board approved 11 revisions including: ■ Using closed-loop drilling mud systems to eliminate open pits; ■ The disclosure of chemical composition before hydraulic fracture;

Lane closures set for 34th Street The eastbound lanes of 34th Street between University Avenue and Avenue V will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning today, May 21, according to a statement from city spokesman Jeff McKito. The closure will last for three consecutive nights while crews work as part of the ongoing 34th Street rehabilitation project. Motorists are encouraged to seek an alternative route.

Young Life brings Bocce ball back with fund raiser 05/20/13 - 7:12am

Teams and sponsors raised $50K

Bocce ball is a game developed in Europe hundreds of years ago, so finding many youths playing the game today is unlikely. However, teenagers from the Young Life of Lubbock are bringing Bocce back. Twenty-two four-person teams competed in a tournament Sunday, May 19, at Frenship High School. The teams each raised $400 to enter the tournament, said organizer Cory Newsom. The group’s goal was to raise money to start a fund to help kids from Young Life of Lubbock attend the annual weeklong summer camp.

Drivers are being urged to avoid or plan for delays at several major Lubbock thoroughfares, including Slide Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, as the city begins a nearly monthlong micro-surfacing project this week. Beginning Tuesday, May 21, Intermountain Slurry Seal — under contract with the city of Lubbock — will begin applying a two-course seal coat on major thoroughfares across Lubbock, city spokesman Jeff McKito said. The projects are part of $1.7 million in micro-surfacing work on city streets planned as part of the 2013 city budget.

A trooper with the Department of Public Safety and his family will spend Saturday night away from their home after an afternoon fire damaged the garage and spread to the attic. DPS Sgt. Jerry Johnson said the unnamed trooper returned to his home in the 9000 block of East County Road 7000 after finishing his shift and parked his patrol car in the garage. He returned to the garage to retrieve something from his car, noticed the vehicle and a nearby truck were on fire and heard a “popping sound” in the garage, Johnson said.

One of the oldest and largest law firms in Lubbock is celebrating its 85th year in business this month. McCleskey, Harriger, Brazill & Graf LLP commemorated the milestone with an event for clients and friends at the Llano Estacado Winery on Tuesday, May 16. Don Graf was also honored at the event. He has spent 50 years with the firm, having started in 1962.
