A year after hosting 11 home matches last season, the Texas Tech women’s soccer team will decrease that number but ramp up its competition to prepare for a difficult Big 12 slate.

The Red Raiders will play 18 regular season matches — featuring six 2016 NCAA Tournament squads, three conference championship and eight contests at the John Walker Soccer Complex — as announced Thursday.

Texas Tech head coach Tom Stone, who enters his 11th season at the helm, will prepare his team for 11 opponents who posted double-digit win totals, six of which were ranked by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and five who finished in the top 50 of the NCAA RPI last season.

In Big 12 play, the Red Raiders will face off against NCAA College Cup runner-up West Virginia.

“As the Big 12 has evolved into one of the top conferences in the country, we have had to be very intentional about making sure that we prepare ourselves for Big 12 competition through our non-conference schedule,” Stone said. “Two Pac-12 teams, Pepperdine, conference champions and multiple NCAA tournament teams will test us and hopefully prepare us for what’s ahead.

“As for the Big 12, we have the returning NCAA Runner-up in WVU and a wide-open field which appears to be as good as we have been in years from top to bottom. 2017 should be a very exciting soccer campaign.”

Texas Tech, which returns its top four goal scorers in Jade King (six), Rebekah O’Brien (three), Gwennie Puente (two) and Jordie Harr (two), begins its season with an Aug. 12 7 p.m. exhibition match on the road against the University of Denver.

The Red Raiders home opener is scheduled for Sept 3. against Appalachian State. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Texas Tech return all of its scoring punch and a majority of its backline defense from a season ago. The Red Raiders also brought in 11 newcomers who are expected to contribute on the attack and fortify the defense.
