Keke Coutee

Position: Inside receiver

Ht./Wt.: 5-11, 180

Class: Junior

High school: Lufkin

Last year: Coutee caught 55 passes for 890 yards and seven touchdowns. He emerged over the final seven games of the season with 100-yard performances against Kansas State, Oklahoma, Iowa State and Baylor. In the latter, he caught eight passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns in a 54-35 victory.

Outlook for 2017: Kliff Kingsbury deems Coutee the team’s No. 1 receiver, and it’s noteworthy he said so even before Biletnikoff Award semifinalist Jonathan Giles decided to transfer. Coutee’s a small target for passers, but he’s terrific after the catch.

Kingsbury indicated what Coutee’s done off the field is the biggest reason for his development.

“He changed his body,” Kingsbury said. “He’s a guy who came in really thin, pretty much weak, and he’s really developed his lower-body strength, his upper-body strength. So the blocking aspect of it, the breaking tackles, the coming out of routes more explosively, has really (improved). I think more than anything, it’s just developing physically.”

Coutee played outside receiver two years ago and began last season as an “H” inside receiver. Now the Tech offensive staff will deploy him at “Y” inside receiver, wanting to maximize his playmaking opportunities with some of the deeper routes that go with that position.
