Dylan Cantrell

Position: Flanker

Ht./wt.: 6-3, 223

Class: Senior

High school: Whitehouse

Last year: Having redshirted because of back problems in 2015, his third year on campus, Cantrell bounced back in a big way with 58 catches for 675 yards and eight touchdowns. He ranked third on the team for catches and receiving yards and tied for second in touchdown catches. Cantrell missed two Big 12 games in October with a broken hand.

Outlook for 2017: With career high numbers across the board in 2016 and an impeccable reputation for his work in strength and conditioning, Cantrell will be counted on to play a key role as a senior.

“He’s really done a good job improving his speed,” Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said recently. “He’s a guy that’ll play a bunch at Z (flanker). He’s big, strong, physical, will go up and get the ball. You just get it close to him.”

The Red Raiders need more players like Cantrell. Strength and conditioning coach Rusty Whitt called him “one of the best athletes I’ve probably ever coached,” citing Cantrell’s 40-inches-plus vertical jump and athletic dunks in basketball. Outside receivers coach Emmett Jones was asked which Tech receiver has the best hands and replied, “I’ll go with my favorite, Dylan Cantrell.

“I’ll go to him every play, if you ask me,” Jones said. “Every play, I find (number) 14. Every play.”

Cantrell finished the 2016 season strong. In November, he had back-to-back eight-catch games against Texas and Oklahoma and caught nine passes for career highs of 111 yards and two touchdowns in the finale against Baylor. If he can stay healthy, he seems primed for a big year.
