A memorial service will be held Monday, January 3, 2011 at First United Methodist Church in Post for Tommie J. Lewis who passed away January 1. Tommie was born July 29, 1919 in Pollok, Texas to Dempsey Dee and Bertha Mae (McAdams) Lewis. He grew up in Chillicothe, Texas, where he met and married his wife of seventy years, Marie Baxter, on October 5, 1940.
Tommie was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Okanogan. After a career as an auto body mechanic, he retired to Lake Stamford to pursue his lifelong hobby of fishing. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Post and a life time member of the Veterans of the Foreign War.
Tommie is survived by his wife, Marie of Post; daughter, Doris Giddens and husband Joe of Post; son, Tom Lewis and wife Lena of Arlington; and six grandchildren, Danna Mantooth and husband Rick of San Angelo, Holly Brake and husband Shelby of Lubbock, Wade Giddens and wife Bonnie of San Antonio, Scott Lewis and wife Leslie of McKinney, Carrie Ellerbe and husband Malcolm of Gilroy, Calif. and Dustin Lewis and wife Laura of Arlington. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Calhoun and husband Levi of San Angelo, Clayton and Evan Brake of Lubbock, Ben, Calvin and Matthew Giddens of San Antonio, Justin and Natalie Lewis of McKinney, Bryce Morgan of Arlington, Nichole and Jenna Lewis of Arlington. He is also survived by two sisters Hester Clark of Lubbock and Oleta McCubbin of Witchita Falls; one brother, Alvin E. Lewis of Lubbock; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and one brother.
Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church in Post or the Garza County Senior Citizens' Center.
