Loyola Maryland quick hits (Krista Pirtle's Blog)

Loyola Maryland returns 52.7 percent of its points and 63.9 percent of its rebounds from last year’s team.

The Greyhounds’ top player, Dylon Cormier, used up his eligibility last season.

Now, junior forward Jarred Jones is the top returning scorer for Loyola after 8.6 points per game a season ago.

Junior guard Eric Laster was close behind with 8.3 points per game.

The Greyounds have six newcomers on this year’s team, one shy of Texas Tech’s seven new faces.

Despite the 31 turnovers over the pair of exhibition games, Smith hopes the extra ball handlers he has in the back court help in that area.

Last season, Texas Tech either played senior Robert Turner or Randy Onwuasor at the point guard.

Rarely did the two step on the floor together.

That left them as the only real ball handling options in the back court.

Texas Tech MBB injuries and more (Krista Pirtle's Blog)

In the early minutes against Texas A&M-Commerce, senior point guard Robert Turner twisted his ankle under the Lions’ goal.

While he went back into the game less than five minutes later, Turner struggled on the court with 3-of-11 shooting for nine points, no assists and five turnovers.

“I saw him turn it, so I took him right out,” Smith said. “Every time I looked down the bench he was going, ‘Coach, I’m ready.’ I’m like, ‘OK. If you’re ready then I think you’re ready.’ ... (Turner) was coming off a good performance, but he turned the ball over too many times.”

Texas Tech MBB probable starters vs. Loyola Maryland (Krista Pirtle's Blog)

In Texas Tech’s two exhibition games, coach Tubby Smith went with the same starters in each — senior Robert Turner at point guard, sophomore Randy Onwuasor and junior Toddrick Gotcher out on the wings, senior Clark Lammert at forward and freshman Norense Odiase at center.

Turner averaged 14 points during those two games, while Onwuasor led the team with a total of seven assists.

For Friday’s match-up against Loyola Maryland, Smith expects to change up the starting lineup.

Jordan Jackson, the son of former Texas Tech standout Sheryl Swoopes, has signed to play at his mother's alma mater.
