Tech MBB looks to repeat last year's perimeter defense improvement (Krista Pirtle's Blog)

Texas Tech struggled with perimeter defense in its first exhibition game, a win over Southeastern Oklahoma State 79-67. The Savage Storm was 11-of-34 from deep for 32.4 percent.

Coach Tubby Smith helped his squad improve its perimeter defense a season ago, and he’ll do it again this year.

Last year, Texas Tech struggled defending the three early on in the season, allowing opponents to shoot 36.5 percent in the nonconference. Six teams shot over 40 percent from deep against Tech.

Janine Beckie named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year (Krista Pirtle's Blog)

Junior Janine Beckie was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year on Monday.

She is the first Red Raider in program history to receive the honor after leading the league in points (29), goals (13) and shot attempts (103).

Beckie is joined by seniors Jaelene Hinkle and Paige Strahan, along with junior Hannah Devine, sophomore Lauren Watson and freshman Cassie Conarty.

The total six selections marked the third-straight season where Texas tech had at least five honorees.

Texas Tech men's basketball begins its season with an exhibition game against Southeastern Oklahoma State that tips off at 7 p.m. and is free to the public. 

Extra exhibition
Last year, Texas Tech participated in a scrimmage at SMU.  This season, coach Tubby Smith decided to host an extra exhibition game to get his young team some experience.

"I think our players need some playing time against some competition," Smith said. "We have a lot of guys we need to take a look at because we're not certain about who can step up yet."

Dunk City might be moving 1,566 miles west of Florida Gulf Coast to Texas Tech this season. At least, that's what Toddrick Gotcher hopes. "(The fans) are going to be up in their seats this year," the junior guard said. "It's going to be a dunk fest.
