Big 12 in the 2014 NBA Draft (Krista Pirtle's Blog)

The Big 12 had five players selected in Thursday’s NBA Draft. Six if you count the NBA’s selection of Isaiah Austin between the No. 15 and No. 16 pick.

Austin would have heard his name called in the second round, but medical testing done by the NBA revealed that he had Marfan Syndrome, thus ending his career.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver invited Austin to the draft as his guest and honored him halfway through the first round.

Texas Tech's basketball season looked challenging before it even started last year.

Of course, most every team in the Big 12 is a tough opponent.

But the nonconference schedule was just ridiculous with games against Arizona, Arizona State and Pittsburgh to name a few.

Thursday evening further proved how tough this past year was for the Red Raiders who went 14-18 on the season.

Joel Embiid to the 76ers (Krista Pirtle's Blog)

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Joel Embiid with the third pick of the NBA Draft.

He will be paired with Nerlens Noel in the front court as NBA Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams will run the offense from the point.

Last season at Kansas, Embiid averaged 11.2 points and 8.1 boards per game while blocking 72 shots.

The 7-footer's shot blocking ability is not limited to inside the lane.

Instead, he can block shots well outside the paint.

On the offensive end, his footwork is pristine. Embiid can also turn over both shoulders and finish down low.

Andrew Wiggins goes No. 1 to the Cleveland Cavaliers (Krista Pirtle's Blog)

The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Andrew Wiggins with their No. 1 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.

Wiggins joins Anthony Davis as the only No. 1-ranked high school recruits to go first in the draft since 2007.

Last season at Kansas, Wiggins led the team in scoring with 17.1 points per game with 5.9 rebounds.

His explosiveness offensively extends beyond the half court. Wiggins' athleticism helps him get out in transition as well.

At 6-foot-8, his length helps him on the defensive end where he can guard multiple positions.

A year later, Cleveland's No. 1 pick of Anthony Bennett is seen as a miss.

Last season, Bennett averaged 4.2 points in 12.8 minutes per game.

Because of that, most analysts think that the Cavaliers can't take the risk to draft Joel Embiid of Kansas with the top pick.

Embiid's history of injuries is a concern. When will he be able to make a contribution to an NBA team?

He recently underwent foot surgery after breaking his navicular bone in his right foot and is expected back in four to six months, missing summer league and training camp.

Over the past two years, Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith has coached against eight of the top prospects in this year's NBA Draft. "There are a number of guys that we played and, unfortunately, most of them beat us," Smith said.
