IRVING — The season is already over for Dallas Cowboys tight end John Phillips.

Tests on Monday confirm that Phillips tore the ACL in his right knee during the Cowboys’ preseason opener. He had four catches for 60 yards in the Hall of Fame game Sunday night against Cincinnati.

Phillips was the No. 3 tight end as a rookie last season behind Pro Bowl starter Jason Witten and Martellus Bennett. The Cowboys were hoping to expand his role this season.

Kevin Brock replaced Phillips and then he left the game with a sprained left ankle. Undrafted rookie free agent tight end Scott Sicko sustained a concussion in the game.

Bennett didn’t play Sunday night to rest the sprained ankle that forced him to miss the first week of camp.
