High school soccer roundup: Monterey routs Tascosa, stays near front of 2-5A race

Jordan Smith and Marc Casares scored two goals apiece and Isaac Wilkins recorded his ninth shutout as Monterey blasted Tascosa 6-0 Saturday in a District 2-5A boys soccer match at Lowrey Field.

Nando Hernandez added a goal and two assists for the Plainsmen (17-3-4, 8-1-2 in 2-5A), who continue to stalk Amarillo (18-2-4, 9-1-1) at the top of the league standings. Amarillo has a two-point edge going into the final regular-season matches with Monterey facing Lubbock High on Monday and Amarillo taking on Coronado on Tuesday.

Brandon Batto also had two assists for Monterey.

In addition to his five saves, Wilkins even got in on the act offensively, scoring his team’s fifth goal on a second-half penalty kick.

Monterey girls 3, Tascosa 0

Alex Hernandez scored a goal and provided an assist for Monterey, which beat Tascosa 3-0 in a District 2-5A girls match at Lowrey Field.

Alexis Ambriz and Jessica Barrera also scored goals for the Lady Plainsmen (13-4-2, 7-2-2), while Xan Fleming and Taylor Narvaiz had assists. Goalkeeper Franchesca Lozoya made five saves for the shutout.

Monterey, which has secured second place in 2-5A, will conclude the regular season at 5 p.m. Monday against Lubbock High.

Lubbock High boys 0

AMARILLO — Andrew Pertl scored on a penalty kick 14 minutes into the second half as Amarillo beat Lubbock High in a District 2-5A boys match at Dick Bivins Stadium.

The first-place Sandies (18-2-4, 9-1-1) remained two standings points ahead of Monterey and can clinch the district championship by beating Coronado in Tuesday’s regular-season finale. The Westerners (4-9-4, 3-5-3), who will finish no worse than a tie for third place, conclude the regular season at 7 p.m. Monday against Monterey.

Amarillo 12

Lubbock High girls 0

AMARILLO — Heather Terbush scored four goals and dished out two assists for Amarillo, which cruised past Lubbock High in a District 2-5A girls match at Dick Bivins Stadium.

Elizabeth Brock also recorded a hat trick for the Lady Sandies (17-3-4, 10-0-1), scoring three times. Amarillo, which had already secured the 2-5A title, got goals from five other players and scored nine times in the second half.

The Lady Westerners (2-16, 0-11) wrap up their season at 5 p.m. Monday against Monterey.
