LHS clinches second place in District 4-4A

ABILENE — Kaitlynn Dawson went 2 for 4, drove in three runs and pitched a complete game as Coronado clobbered Abilene Cooper, 12-2, on Friday, reaching the 30-win mark in its District 2-5A finale. The Lady Mustangs (30-2, 15-1) reached 30 wins for the third year in a row and the sixth time in the last seven seasons. District champion Coronado will face El Paso Bel Air in a best-of-three bi-district series next week in Alpine. The series opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday with the remainder of the series set for 11 a.m. April 27.

WOLFFORTH — Heading into the season, Frenship softball coach Robby Dickenson was unsure what type of offense his team would have. The Tigers left little room for questioning Friday night in their final game of the regular season. Backed by three home runs, Frenship rallied to defeat Monterey, 9-4, clinching a perfect District 4-4A season.

Monterey senior threw five-inning perfect game against Hereford last week

Holding a gaudy 26-0 lead against Hereford last week, Alysia Rivas had no real pressure of losing the game with two outs remaining in the final inning. But someone had clued her in on another situation. She found out she was one out away from a no hitter. “I didn’t know until the last out of the last inning,” Rivas said, “and then I kind of was freaking out.” Rivas calmed down, threw hard and erased the final Hereford batter in a five-inning game. Turns out, though, it wasn’t a no-hitter. It was a perfect game.

Frenship, Monterey and Lubbock High all win

Midland Lee scored four runs in its final three innings, and the Lady Rebels upset No. 1 Coronado 4-2 in a District 2-5A clash on Tuesday. Lee scored two runs in the fifth inning, tying the game 2-2. Two homers in the final two innings cemented its victory against the Lady Mustangs. Coronado had an early lead with Monique Garcia going 2 for 2 with two RBIs in the third and fifth innings. Garcia pitched all seven innings, giving up five hits, no walks, and striking out 14. Coronado plays at Abilene Cooper on at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

SHALLOWATER — Moments before the first pitch between the Shallowater and Cooper softball teams Tuesday night, the Fillies were eliminated from postseason contention via Seminole’s victory against Levelland. That didn’t stop the Fillies from playing like a playoff team. Led by timely hitting, strong pitching and just enough plays by the defense, Shallowater upset Cooper 5-4 at home, giving the two Shallowater seniors a rousing send-off in their final home game.

SAN ANGELO — Behind the strength of a Monique Garcia no-hitter, the top-ranked Coronado softball team clinched its 18th straight district title Saturday with a 7-0 victory against San Angelo Central. The Lady Mustangs (29-1, 14-0 in District 2-5A) recently moved into the No. 1 spot, the first time they have ascended to the top spot, according to coach J.J. Johnson. Garcia, who improved to 21-0 with the win, finished with 12 strikeouts and two walks, both to leadoff hitter Shelly Picasso.

Lubbock High softball coach Sherri Culwell has a 24-hour rule on celebrating wins. She may have to allow some wiggle room after Friday’s game against Monterey. Sparked by a four-run sixth inning, the Lady Westerners topped the Lady Plainsmen, 5-2, on their home field, moving into a second-place tie in District 4-4A with their crosstown rivals. “It’s big,” Culwell said after the game. “I’m not going to try to say anything that’s trite or something that’s overused. It’s big for my kids in more than one way.”

PLAINVIEW — Brea Varnell hit a two-run home run in the first inning to jolt Frenship past Plainview, 13-3, on Friday in District 4-4A softball. Varnell went 3 for 4 and drove in five runs against the Lady Bulldogs (4-4 in District 4-4A). Miley McKee went 3 for 5 with three RBIs for the Tigers (22-7, 8-0) and teammates K’Leigh Arredondo and Adriana Chavez both doubled to clinch the victory for Frenship. Cooper softball takes sole possession of second place in District 2-3A 04/12/13 - 12:40am

SEMINOLE — Bailee Cowan and Sami Gonzales hit RBI singles in the top of the sixth inning Thursday, lifting Cooper past Seminole 5-4 in a key District 2-3A softball game. Alyssa Hughes smacked a two-run homer in the third inning that gave Cooper a 3-1 lead, but Seminole rallied in front with Kristi Morales’ solo homer in the third and two runs in the fifth.
