NEW DEAL — McKenzie Hockenberry was worried about throwing in the rain last weekend at the UIL state track and field meet. But when the Class 1A Division I discus event was pushed back 90 minutes, Hockenberry was given just enough of a window to throw in the sun. “The sun came out,” Hockenberry said, “and I got to throw in the sunshine. As soon as I got finished, it started raining again.” The New Deal junior made the most of the pause in precipitation.

Hale Center senior Poindexter earns silver, gold in last trip to state 05/16/13 - 12:36am

Hale Center coach Paul Chandler knew Dearius Poindexter could jump high. Heck, he was a state champion two years ago as a sophomore. The way Poindexter jumped Friday, though, was something else altogether. “That’s the best I’ve ever seen that kid compete,” Chandler said. Poindexter, a slender 6-foot-3 senior, cleared 6-11 to win the Class 1A Division I high jump at the UIL state track and field meet in Austin and went 23-3 for a silver medal in the long jump.

Trinity boys take second at TAPPS 4A state track meet 05/12/13 - 1:24am

WACO — Bolstered by strong performances from its relay teams and by Paul Gaschen in the pole vault, the Trinity Christian boys track team finished second overall at the TAPPS State Track Meet on Saturday. Gaschen won the pole vault with a height of 13-6. Trinity’s 400 and 800 relay teams each took second place. In the 400, the quartet of Tucker Wentz, Colton Eaton, Tyl Clark and Josh Hamilton crossed the line in 43.15. Wentz, Eaton, Clark and Addison Womack teamed up for the 800 relay to finish second in a time of 1:31.23.

AUSTIN– The case can be made that the best jumpers in Texas are in West Texas. And don’t underestimate them based on gender or school size. Hale Center senior Dearius Poindexter and New Deal sophomore Jordan Menton each won their second state titles in the high jump Friday on the first day of the UIL state track and field meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

AUSTIN– Adam Hood ticked off the odds against him getting a medal at state, and he didn’t even mention perhaps the biggest obstacle. Whatever. It's not as if anything stopped him. Hood’s storybook senior season ended Friday in Mike A. Myers Stadium with a bronze medal draped around his neck for a third-place finish in the Class 4A boys shot put.

Tadarius Ridge was in the Texas Tech trainers’ room getting treatment two weeks ago, when someone alerted him the Region I-3A girls’ 300-meter hurdles race was about to start. “I was like, ‘Hurry up. Rush out there. I’ve got to see how my sister’s doing,’” said Ridge, a standout senior from Andrews. Whenever Oceana Ridge competes lately — Oceana or her brother, either one, for that matter — there’s good reason to watch.

Sudan's Dayton Fisher continues to excel in track events 05/02/13 - 12:39am

Fisher broke record in high jump, is qualified for state in three events

After winning the Class 1A state championship in the high jump last May, Dayton Fisher hung a list of goals on his wall for this season. Among them: Clear 7 feet. It took a while, but he achieved it with room to spare. The Sudan senior went 7-1 on Saturday in Levelland, breaking a 38-year-old Region I-1A meet record of 6-9. “It was awesome,” he said. “The crowd really helped me out a little bit. I was jumping fine, but whenever they started to clap and stuff, that gave me a lot more adrenaline and helped me get over the bar.”

Regional track: Third-place finishers await wild-card results to move on 04/29/13 - 9:16am

Mitchell Monk crossed the finish line third in the 110-meter hurdles Saturday, and the Levelland senior knew what came next: A bronze medal and 24 hours or so of hope. “That long dreadful wait to see if I get to move on or not,” Monk said during the Region I-3A track and field meet at Texas Tech’s Fuller Track Complex. In each event, the top two finishers advance to state, and the best third-place regional finisher in the state goes as a wild card. Monk finished third in the 110 hurdles for the second year in a row, and last year he didn’t get good news.

Regional track roundup: LHS 800-meter relay team wins regional title 04/28/13 - 1:02am

ABILENE — Lubbock High’s team of Pamela Uchebo, Lateria Slaughter, Wuesi Jefferson, Dalmeshia Tennison won the 800-meter relay Saturday on the final day of the Region I-4A track and field meet at McMurry. The foursome ran a time of 1 minute, 41.56 seconds. The top two finishers in each event advance to the UIL state meet May 10-11 at Mike A. Myers in Austin. The top regional third-place finisher in the state in each event also goes as an at-large.
